UPM TILHILL WINS THREE BALI LANDSCAPE AWARDS

Monday 13. December 2010 - UPM Tilhill staff are celebrating after winning three awards for expert landscaping work at sites in London, Cumbria and Blackburn.

The BALI (British Association of Landscape Industries) awards are held annually to recognise members who have demonstrated exceptionally high standards of professionalism and skill in landscaping.
A Principal Award, the highest honour available in the Land Renewal and Regeneration Scheme category, was presented to UPM Tilhill for the redevelopment and regeneration of The Waterfront in Barrow-In-Furness, Cumbria.
Special consideration had to be given to introducing new vegetation to an exposed coastal location and preserving the habitat of the protected wildlife species. A major achievement of the project was the relocation of the formerly scattered allotments into a modern, purpose-built area with better facilities and security.
Landscaping work by UPM Tilhill at Chiswick House and Gardens, London, won an award in the Hard Landscaping Construction category for contracts in excess of £1.5 million. UPM Tilhill was appointed by English Heritage as the principal contractor for the site and work included cleaning and conservation of historic structures as well as hard and soft landscaping works, stonework, new water systems and electrical work. The team also provided new steel-framed barns, staff accommodation, composting areas and the conversion of existing stables into an education centre.
In the Hard Landscaping category for contracts between £300K and £1.5 million, an award was presented for the creation of a natural playscape and woodland adventure play facility within the historic Witton Country Park, west of Blackburn town centre. The brief from Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council was to develop a flagship adventure play space. The project had to use existing natural features and topography, new natural elements, high-quality play equipment and an innovative design.
Peter Middleton, Commercial Director for UPM Tilhill, said: “We are delighted to have won three prestigious BALI awards which recognise the high standard of our landscaping work and we are very proud of all our staff who were involved in these projects.”
A spokesperson for BALI said: “Being shortlisted for a BALI National Landscape Award is the pinnacle of professional achievement for BALI members. These awards are respected in the UK and abroad as the standard to which others aspire and rightly reflect the prestige of the BALI name and logo.”
The awards are open to all full BALI members and the wide range of categories ensure that every part of the landscaping industry is recognised, from the individual designer and domestic contractor to the largest multi-location company working in the commercial arena.
