Monotype Imaging Introduces the Harmonia Sans Family to the Monotype Typeface Collection

Wednesday 10. November 2010 - Design Blends Contemporary Geometric Sans Serif Letterforms and Classic Calligraphic Proportions

Monotype Imaging Holdings Inc. (Nasdaq: TYPE), a leading global provider of text imaging solutions, has added the Harmonia Sans family to the Monotype typeface collection. The suite features 17 fonts that can be licensed and downloaded from the company’s Fonts.com, Linotype.com and ITCFonts.com stores. Harmonia Sans is also available for website design from Fonts.com Web Fonts.
Designed by Jim Wasco in collaboration with George Ryan, both of Monotype Imaging, Harmonia Sans combines calligraphic proportions with geometric letterforms inspired by sans serif typefaces such as the Futura and ITC Avant Garde Gothic designs. “I wanted to create a simple and legible typeface that pulled from my favorite aspects of these classic, geometric designs,” said Wasco. In addition, Wasco was motivated by the work of Ludovico degli Arrighi, a writing master during the Renaissance period of the sixteenth century.
“The calligraphic, yet geometric appeal of Harmonia Sans transfers beautifully to a wide variety of applications, from printed material and large-scale signage to Web page design as well as displays on mobile phones and other consumer electronics devices,” said Allan Haley, director of words and letters at Monotype Imaging.
Harmonia Sans includes five weights that range from light to black. Each has a cursive italic counterpart. Condensed designs are available for the regular, semi-bold and bold weights, in addition to four monospaced designs. All 17 Harmonia Sans fonts are available as OpenType Pro selections, which allow for the automatic insertion of old style figures, arbitrary fractions, tablular figures, proportional figures, discretionary ligatures and stylistic alternates. OpenType Pro fonts also offer an extended character set to support most central European and many eastern European languages.
The release of Harmonia Sans follows Wasco’s Elegy typeface, announced last August. An ornate script design, Elegy is based on the original International Typeface Corporation logo, drawn by the legendary typeface designer, Ed Benguiat.
