Xeikon and MOSS showcase innovation in plastic decoration at K-Messe

Wednesday 27. October 2010 - Innovative process for decorating plastic pails and containers demonstrated on stand E21, Hall 04

Xeikon, a division of Punch Graphix, and Italy-based MOSS, a leader in container decorating technologies, will be showcasing their jointly developed Digital Decorating System at the K-Messe, which takes place in Düsseldorf (Germany) from October 27 to November 3. This technology, displayed on stand 04/E21, enables fast and cost-efficient decoration of round, conical, rectangular and square pails and containers, even in very short runs.

Labeling the Benefits
Since its introduction in November 2009, the Digital Decorating System has been providing label printers and injection molders an alternative solution for in-mold labeling and direct screen or direct offset print. The benefits of the new decorating technology based on digital printing are vast. Not only does it offer greater flexibility and a more cost effective production of short to medium runs. Furthermore there are no setup nor plate costs involved. It also offers a much higher quality compared the direct print technology, higher in terms of image quality (1200 dpi) and higher in terms of a more opaque white.

Xeikon Business Development Manager Filip Weymans comments: “Today’s market is desperately looking for innovative pail decorating alternatives to cope with demand for greater variation possibilities and shorter lead times. While designed specifically for the decoration of buckets and containers, this system also has a broader application within the general label industry helping printers expand their capabilities innovatively.”

Two-steps to Success
The easy two-step process starts with the Xeikon digital presses printing the exact number of transfers required for the decorating effort. Then the roll of printed transfers is fed into the MOSS Digital Decorating System to perfectly apply transfers to pails or containers using a digital heat transfer process. The DDS (Digital Decoration System) can either be placed next to the Xeikon press or at a different location.

The result is a very high quality, digitally printed and applied decoration that passes all of the typical tests, including scratching, tape, water and others. Opacity and image quality is superior to direct offset printing capabilities and for applications requiring even more durability, an inline varnishing unit can be incorporated in the MOSS transfer machine. Printing on a standard Xeikon digital press enables the printing of self-adhesive labels as well as heat transfer labels.
