EQUIOS Workflow System for Screen Truepress Jet520ZZ Premieres at Graph Expo 2010

The Truepress Jet520ZZ, the new flagship of Screen's variable inkjet web press family, adds faster speeds and wider web capability to the product line.

Thursday 07. October 2010 - When Screen (USA) unveils the Truepress Jet520ZZ at Graph Expo 2010 in Chicago, the high-speed, high-quality variable printing system will be driven by the innovative EQUIOS workflow. Screen’s new Adobe PDF Print Engine 2-based digital front end streamlines production of variable data, transactional and transpromo print jobs.

The Truepress Jet520ZZ is the newly developed flagship model for Screen’s inkjet web press family. EQUIOS enables the Truepress Jet520ZZ to deliver variable data and personalized print jobs at high production speeds.

“Installing EQUIOS significantly improves the inherent performance offered by the Truepress Jet520ZZ,” said Bill Brunone, vice president of targeted inkjet systems at Screen (USA). “Previously, specialized workflows were applied for each device used in computer-to-plate production for offset printing and inkjet-based print on demand. The EQUIOS universal workflow makes operation possible from the same user interface even for different devices.”

Scalable load-balancing RIP system
EQUIOS is designed to be able to change RIP configurations, scaling up to maximize the performance of connected devices. Screen’s development goals call for support for many different types of engines, including CTP devices and sheetfed inkjet printers, in addition to the Truepress Jet520ZZ. EQUIOS uses Adobe PDF Print Engine 2 as its RIP core. Development is under way to handle not only conventional PS and PDF data, but also the PDF/VT variable data format.

Smart variable data processing
EQUIOS automatically extracts, caches and optimizes shared reusable elements included in PDF or PDF/VT variable data. It uses Adobe PDF Print Engine 2 to quickly RIP the data and output it to the printing device. Combining this processing with load balancing makes it possible to achieve an optimal printing environment.

Smart imposition
A built-in imposition function for variable data expands the application range available for the Truepress Jet520ZZ. This includes transpromo, direct mail, books, newspapers and textbooks that support variable data. With book production, it also is possible to generate the barcodes and accessories required on post-processing equipment.

EQUIOS color management system (CMS)
The EQUIOS CMS contains a pre-installed database of individual International Color Consortium (ICC) profiles for each device and paper, enabling the optimal ICC profile to be applied automatically. EQUIOS CMS also includes two built-in color management functions. The Profile Editor function provides simplified color matching with offset printing, while the Spot Color Editor function enables spot colors to be adjusted and registered to a library.

Security
EQUIOS enables user interface access privileges for each operator to be controlled, thereby restricting the range of access to the personal information that is essential for work, such as transpromo and direct marketing. Users also can link with Active Directory or Windows authentication. In addition, externally created user accounts can be imported and set up. This reduces human error and provides consistent user management between the Windows and EQUIOS systems.

JetInspection JI-500 (optional)
It is possible to install a built-in inspection system for variable data printing presses in the Truepress Jet520ZZ main unit. JetInspection JI-500 includes the optical character recognition barcode inspector, which confirms whether variable data has been printed correctly. Inspection results are displayed on the EQUIOS touch screen. In the future, Screen plans to offer a full-pixel, real-time inspection function that compares entire pages, including images and text, with their digital data.

The Truepress Jet520ZZ equipped with EQUIOS will premiere in Screen (USA) booth #1637 at Graph Expo, October 3-6 at McCormick Place in Chicago.
