Pensord powers up with advanced and highly automated long perfector
Tuesday 05. October 2010 - Pensord Press is convinced its new high spec B1 long perfector will save it at least one week per month in makeready times alone compared to the press that it replaces.
Its new Speedmaster XL 105-8-P will be delivered equipped with Inpress Control for automatic colour and register set up and control throughout the run and Autoplate XL simultaneous plate changing.
“This investment is part of our three year investment plan as we set out following the recent management buyout. It is expected to be at least 30% more productive than the SM 102-8-P it replaces. Our CtP is being upgraded ahead of the new year press installation and we will also supplement our finishing with another folder,” says operations director Karl Gater.
“The new XL press technology is very exciting from my perspective and for the operators it should make their work a little easier but no less skilful, with the colour control and plate changing. The higher productivity will mean that the organisation and flow of work will be critical to success.”
About 80% of Pensord’s work is the production of weekly, monthly and bi-monthly business to business publications, the remainder of sales from ad hoc business. In this area the company is finding that print is fairly resilient to the onslaught of Internet based alternatives although the recession has taken its toll on run lengths and is unlikely to recover to the highs of three or four years ago.
Customers care about colour although some still have preferred levels which might still remain subjective despite the colour control and objective measurement that is now available to them. For Pensord, the colour management intrinsic to the use of Inpress Control is vitally important moving forward to achieve ISO 12647-2 standards but secondary to the improvement in set up times that it brings, especially combined with Autoplate XL, and the reduction in start up and production waste that it will provide. The company believes that current average makereadies on the SM 102 will be reduced by at least 50%.
Pensord operates 24 hours a day, six days a week using a Continental shift pattern.
