Pitney Bowes Releases 2009 Report on Global Corporate Responsibility

Friday 03. September 2010 - Pitney Bowes Inc. (NYSE:PBI) today announced the release of its 2009 Corporate Responsibility Report, providing an overview of the company’s progress in several key areas of corporate stewardship. The report is available online at www.pb.com/responsibility.

The 2009 report is divided into five sections, each dealing with a broad category of corporate responsibility initiatives. These include Business Practices, Environment, Our People, Customers and Suppliers, and Community. The 2009 edition updates many of the corporate responsibility metrics from the prior year’s report, and the case studies of progress that the company has made in its focus areas.

“Pitney Bowes recently celebrated its 90th birthday, a milestone few companies achieve. We think one of the secrets to our longevity is our steadfast adherence to the highest standards of business conduct,” said Pitney Bowes Chairman, President and CEO Murray Martin. “It is these core values that power our innovations, our commitment to customers and the community, and our ability to attract and retain the talent we need to succeed.”

Among the key findings in the report:

Employee safety metrics improved across the board, as the company reduced the workplace accident and severity rate.
Customer satisfaction indices rose by double-digit percentages for 15 of the 19 key business processes surveyed.
Company purchases from minority- or women-owned businesses in the U.S. increased to 6% of total supplier spending.
Company grant-making supported the educational enrichment of nearly 22,000 public school students across the U.S., with 82% of this giving dedicated to closing the “achievement gap” between minority students and their non-minority peers nationwide.
The company recycled more than 6.5 million pounds of materials in 2009, and through the end of the year had cumulatively reduced its electricity consumption by 8 million kilowatt hours from the 2007 baseline.
“We are very proud to release the 2009 Corporate Responsibility Report, because it reflects the collective contributions of thousands of Pitney Bowes employees who, every day, seek to improve our standing as a corporate citizen in communities worldwide,” said Kathleen Ryan Mufson, director of corporate citizenship and philanthropy at Pitney Bowes. “Thanks to their hard work, our well-deserved reputation as a global corporate leader continues to be in very good hands.”

The report also updates the outside awards and certifications that Pitney Bowes has captured thanks to its progressive business practices. Recent honors include a fourth consecutive spot on the Ethisphere Institute’s list of the World’s Most Ethical Companies, a Connecticut Green Business Award from Connecticut Business News, Eco-Lighthouse certification from the Norwegian Ministry of the Environment, a National Training Award from the United Kingdom, a Best Company to Work For designation from India’s Great Place to Work Institute, and Top Company listings from Black Enterprise, Professional Woman’s Magazine, Careers and the disABLED, Diversity MBA Magazine, and numerous other publications.
