Johnsons makes impetuous finishing purchases

Friday 25. June 2010 - Johnsons of Nantwich surprised themselves when they decided to order a Eurobind 600 perfect binder and a TH56 fully automated folder from Heidelberg on the last day of the Ipex 2010. Later in the day they also signed up for a Foliant B2 fully automatic laminator.

“Johnsons is a 200 year old company and we attribute our longevity to prudence so it may seem strange that we should make this impetuous buy but it makes sound sense within our overall strategy,” says John MacMillan, managing director.
“From bringing plate-making in-house some years ago (we’re now on our third CTP system) we have continued to try to reduce outwork to cut down external costs and also to enable us to meet the increasingly tight deadlines our customers ask us to work to.”
With restricted space the company was impressed with just how automated the new Stahlfolder TH 56 would be, enabling it to replace two Ti52s and make space for the Eurobind EB 600, marking its debut in perfect binding.
Steve Preston, production director, says: “We have been hand binding some work off our digital presses but now we can use this machine to produce perfect bound books with runs as low as 1 up to realistically 5,000 because of the fast makeready times and ease of use.”
Johnsons of Nantwich has been buying equipment from Heidelberg for more than 100 years and in addition to its modern litho presses it still runs a Cylinder for cutting and creasing that dates back to 1963 and a Platen for foil blocking
The perfect binder will be delivered next month with the folder to follow. The equipment will run on an unusual 12, 24, 24, 24,12 hour working week.
