Metso refurbishes production at Järvenpää, Finland
Wednesday 26. May 2010 - Metso is continuing to develop its production network. The latest revamp took place at the Järvenpää factory, where Metso decided to centralize its manufacture of tube rolls and roll rubber covering in Finland.
A large-scale renovation of the factory premises was required before the refurbished production was ready to start. Some of the production halls were rebuilt for tube roll manufacture and rubber covering. At the same time, the area designated for the assembly of paper finishing machines was improved to ensure practicality and safety.
Construction took half a year, involving 200 people from 50 companies. 7,000 m2 of the floor of the facility, which is the size of about five football pitches, was demolished.
700 truckloads of concrete and earth were needed in order to build the machinery foundations and new floors. Machinery for tube roll manufacture and rubber covering was moved from Tampere and Oulu to Järvenpää.
Metsos aim with this refurbishment is to optimize its production premises. The concentration of tube roll manufacture and rubber covering in the same facility will cut transport costs, shorten lead time and make production more effective.
Metso´s unit at Järvenpää has specialized in paper finishing machines and employs close to 1,000 people, about a third of whom work in production. Some of the tube roll manufacturing and rubber covering experts came to work in Järvenpää when operations were closed down at Tampere and Oulu. Some of the Järvenpää workers were retrained for the jobs offered in tube roll manufacturing and rubber covering.
