SGIA Keeps Members Updated About New Health Care Reform

Monday 10. May 2010 - Changes in legislation may affect employers this year

SGIA is currently assessing how the recent health care bill will affect specialty imaging business and plans to keep its members up-to-date on the new legislation through SGIA’s Blog.

Many provisions in the health care package focus on changes to the insurance industry, such as coverage of dependents until the age of 26 and elimination of the pre-existing conditions for both children and adults. While certain pieces of the legislation do not become effective until 2018, other conditions are already in effect.

This year, the provisions for small business tax credits become effective. Businesses will receive full, partial or no tax credit depending on the number of employees. Also, only businesses that offer health insurance are qualified to receive the credit.

An estimated 44 percent of all small business employees could be affected by the employer mandate provisions, effective in 2014. This equates to approximately 26.4 million people and 22 percent of the entire private sector workforce. Employer mandate provisions depend on the number of employees you have, whether or not you offer insurance and whether or not any of your employees receive premium subsidies.
