Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 Redefines Nonlinear Editing

Tuesday 04. May 2010 - Groundbreaking Release Dramatically Accelerates Professional Video Workflows

Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) today announced Adobe Premiere Pro CS5, a new release of the industry-leading nonlinear editor, offering breakthrough performance and features that drive post-production workflows. A core component of Adobe Creative Suite 5 Production Premium and Adobe Creative Suite 5 Master Collection (see separate releases), Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 is packed with highly anticipated features: the Adobe Mercury Playback Engine so users can open and edit complex projects faster; support for native tapeless workflows that eliminate transcoding and rewrapping; and easy project interchange with Apple and Avid systems for an open and collaborative workflow. Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 includes Adobe OnLocation CS5 and Adobe Encore CS5 software to facilitate production from script to screen.

“With Adobe Premiere Pro CS5, Adobe has dramatically upped the ante with chart-busting performance and features that leapfrog the competition in native support for tapeless workflows, project interchange and metadata that make video assets searchable and far more valuable,” said Jim Guerard, vice president and general manager for Dynamic Media at Adobe. “Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 is going to shake up the entire industry by delivering exceptional editing power that redefines what’s possible in a non-linear editing system.”

Radical Performance Breakthroughs with the New Mercury Playback Engine
Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 software has been optimized from the ground up to deliver outstanding performance and exceptional stability. The all new Mercury Playback Engine is 64-bit native, optimized for operating systems, multicore processors, and NVIDIA GPUs to provide an amazingly fluid, real-time editing experience. Video professionals can maintain full frame rate, at full resolution when applying multiple color corrections and effects across many video layers, and when working on complex timelines and long-form projects with thousands of clips—whether a project is in SD, HD, 2K, or 4K. Editors can also open large projects up to 10 times faster, and mix and match AVCHD, P2, XDCAM, RED, and DSLR camera formats freely in the timeline, without rendering. Editing is significantly faster on laptops for in-field editing and with mid-range systems, the productivity gains measured in independent benchmarks conducted by Pfeiffer Consulting demonstrated up to 10 times performance increases over earlier versions on effects-heavy, high resolution projects.

“I was among the first Final Cut Pro users ever, but my Final Cut Pro days are over,” said Tim Walton, documentary filmmaker and editor for Sacramento, California PBS affiliate KVIE. “Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 is stellar because it offers the 64-bit Mercury Playback Engine, giving me the ability to work in real time with 4K RED files—I literally couldn’t pay enough money for that. I’ve used a dozen different nonlinear editors and know of none that compare to the capabilities and streamlined workflow Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 offers today.”

Industry-Leading Tapeless Workflows
Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 makes the most efficient tapeless workflow available even better by adding new native support for the latest tapeless and DSLR cameras, expanding Adobe’s leadership in next-generation workflows. With native support, users do not have to waste valuable production time transcoding or rewrapping, and have access to the original file’s pristine quality. In addition to Canon and Nikon DSLR support, new support for XDCAM HD 50, AVCCAM, DPX, and AVC-Intra, as well as enhanced RED R3D support builds on existing capabilities for P2, XDCAM EX and HD, and AVCHD. In addition, Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 users can also now take advantage of new powerful logging options for tapeless cameras in Adobe OnLocation CS5.

Open, Flexible Production and Distribution
Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 enables video professionals to collaborate with ease by supporting roundtrip editing between Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 and Apple Final Cut Pro, Avid Media Composer or Digidesign Pro Tools software. This gives users and workgroups maximum flexibility when moving assets between applications and collaborating on projects.

The open, flexible architecture of Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 allows it to be extended to work within custom infrastructures. Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 is extensible using panels created in Adobe Flash Professional, enabling broadcast and film companies to use Adobe Premiere Pro in sophisticated, tightly integrated workflows, including integration with asset management and file transfer systems, as well as with newsroom systems such as ENPS. This open extensibility allows customers to use industry-standard, designer-friendly Adobe authoring tools to create customized and compelling, integrated workflows, bringing the power of the Adobe Flash Platform for engaging experiences directly into the editing workflow.

Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 is the only nonlinear editor that is truly optimized for online video—while enabling distribution to standard formats as well. From ingest to encoding, Adobe Premiere Pro uses metadata to make assets easier to find and navigate, adding intelligence along the way that makes content more valuable when distributed online. Adobe Premiere Pro enables users to deliver your work everywhere, from broadcast video formats to Blu-ray Discs, DVDs, Web DVDs, mobile devices and beyond.
