Chesapeake selects Speedmaster XL 105 to maximise “shelf appeal”
Wednesday 21. April 2010 - Chesapeake Newcastle will take delivery of a Speedmaster XL 105-8+LYYL, an eight unit straight press with double coaters, in June. This is a press which will give the company the opportunity to responsively supply cartons to the premium food and confectionary markets to consistently superb colour standards, optimising brand recognition.
The plant which currently runs with MAN Roland and Komori presses has this time turned to Heidelberg for the most advanced press technology. The XL 105 is a well proven and highly productive press that will give the carton company the opportunity to run with UV, aqueous or conventional inks and coatings.
George Clarke, managing director of Heidelberg UK, says: “The XL 105 specified by Chesapeake is the longest of its type supplied to a packaging company to date in the UK. The eight units and double coaters will give the company fantastic flexibility In the products they can supply, the depth of colour and range of specials and finishes they can offer. It is enormously productive.
“Lean manufacturing is core to the plants ethos and the beefy specification of this press reflects that. It features Autoplate XL simultaneous plate changing and logistics meaning non stop supply of board to the feeder and the automatic removal of finished work from delivery.
“It has closed loop colour with Prepress Interface workflow between prepress and press coupled with Image Control, one of Heidelbergs top of the range spectral measurement devices which ensures colour is adjusted throughout a run and from run to run. This is also the first installation in the UK of Inspection Control which ensures quality throughout the run, automatically checking for the risk of hickeys or other variables in the product.
“One carton producer clocked up 100 million impressions in 25 months on an XL 105 and we expect this press to be challenging that record. It is going to be a carton-producing monster.”
Chesapeake Newcastle employs 200 well qualified staff who together offer customers a comprehensive service from digital photography, market quality mock-ups and full colour design and reprographics right through to production and award winning finishing and effects prior to delivery.
The site is ISO 9001 and SI014001 accredited, holds both FSC and PEFC Chain of Custody certification as well as the BRC Global Standard for Food Packaging (2002) and Investors in People.
