SGIA Recognizes First-Ever Sustainability Award Winners

Wednesday 24. March 2010 - Three member companies awarded for extensive sustainability efforts

SGIA member companies, BIG INK Display Graphics (St. Paul, Minnesota), Modernistic Inc. (Stillwater, Minnesota) and Stella Color (Seattle), were recently honored with SGIA’s Sustainability Recognition Award.

To qualify, companies were required to submit a copy of their sustainability policy. BIG INK is committed to creating and encouraging sustainable practices in all areas of their business, specifically by reducing, reusing and recycling all materials used in their process. Modernistic’s policy highlights their commitment to integrating environmental, safety and health elements in their operations facility-wide, while making employee health and safety a top priority. Stella Color’s policy stresses their strong commitment to providing a safe and innovative workplace, as well as a commitment to reduce, reuse and recycle.

Additionally, each company outlined a series of goals for the coming year. BIG INK plans to reduce roof temperatures by 30 degrees with the purchase of a new building that included a roof deck, skylights and a white roof. Modernistic plans to reduce their energy consumption by 60 percent by switching to compact modular high-intensity fluorescent fixtures. And, Stella Color expects to reduce its disposal tonnage by five percent, and offer employees alternate commute options.

Modernistic has received certification from the Sustainable Green Printing (SGP) Partnership and Stella Color is a SGP applicant. To support SGIA members in their sustainability journey, SGIA’s 4-Step Sustainability Action Plan, in its first year, allows specialty imaging companies to take steps toward developing a sustainable business ethic and receive the Sustainability Recognition Award.
