Two years on and Clifford Chance enjoys print environment enhancements with Xerox Managed Print Services

Thursday 18. February 2010 - Market leading global law firm rationalises its fleet, cutting the number of print devices by 30%while reducing print volumes by 20%

Clifford Chance, one of the world’s leading law firms, has successfully enhanced its print environment with the Xerox Managed Print Services (MPS) solution. Under the agreement, Xerox supplies Clifford Chance’s London office with a Managed Print Service and a range of multi-function devices. On the second anniversary of the MPS implementation, Xerox has revealed that the solution has helped to generate a 30% reduction in the number of devices being used. During the same period print volumes have fallen by 20%. The implementation demonstrates the value MPS provides and Xerox’s capability and flexibility in supporting the legal sector.

Printing is mission critical for law firms, as much of the work undertaken within the legal sector is paper based. Since its introduction in November 2007, the Xerox MPS solution has aided in generating a 20% reduction in print volume at Clifford Chance. Through a revised allocation and reduced number of devices, increased networking of printers and duplex printing, the move has enabled Clifford Chance to encourage better sustainability practices by significantly reducing its paper and ink usage.

“A high level of document exchange for clients and cases is commonplace in the legal sector. Our business moves fast, and we rely heavily on technology, especially printing, to serve our clients’ needs,” said Lee Doyle, Head of Business Operations, Clifford Chance. “Xerox devices came out top in usability trials with our users and the fact that they would also source and manage other manufacturers’ devices gave us the versatility we needed to ensure we were able to have and use the devices that best suited our needs.”

The Managed Print Service included the deployment of a team of eight in the London office to manage all printers, fax machines, paper shredders and MFDs. The team is also responsible for managing the company’s paper supply. Under the contract, Clifford Chance also benefits from performance management via service level agreements and monthly reporting.

“Before the contract began, we investigated Clifford Chance’s print habits, talking to staff and assessing printer usage,” said Peter Romaine, director and general manager, Xerox Global Services, Xerox UK. “We offered a number of potential printer infrastructure designs, allowing Clifford Chance to weigh up different service levels and degrees of cost reduction that could be achieved. This model was found to be the most suited to their needs and has successfully met their objectives.”

As part of the solution, Xerox has installed and managed both Xerox machines and devices from other suppliers. Xerox currently monitors approximately 1.5 million devices from multiple vendors globally. Clifford Chance is one of the many legal firms that Xerox works with in the growing managed print services and document management market.

Xerox was positioned by Gartner, Inc., in the Leaders Quadrant in the “Magic Quadrant for Managed Print Services Worldwide”[1] for 2009 and the company was named MPS market leader in Quocirca’s 2009 European MPS report.
