2009 Reed Technology Medal Recognizes Dr. Peter Crean
Friday 05. February 2010 - Printing Industries of America, along with its Ben Franklin Honor Society, is proud to announce that Dr. Peter Crean, Research Fellow for Xerox Innovation Group, has been named the recipient of the 2009 Robert F. Reed Technology Medal.
Dr. Crean has changed the industry for more than 35 years with his innovations and inventions. He is one of two Senior Fellows at Xerox, among 10,000 scientists and engineers. In 1970, he was one of three members of the initial engineering team that produced the first laser printer. For the past 20 years, Dr. Crean has been a leading member of all Xerox color programs and founded the Xerox color management group.
Dr. Crean has developed 40 patents throughout his career. His inventions include inkjet, image scanning, and color image processing. His first patent was started with Xerox’s first CCD high-quality, high-speed document scanner (31-34), which he built. Some of Dr. Crean’s patents are as follows:
Color adjustment apparatus and method
Method for generating rendering tags to facilitate the printing of anti-aliased images
Pipelined architecture for patterned halftone generation
Inkjet printer droplet height sensing control
Scanning apparatus
Tone error control for image contour removal
His work spans several printing processes, including xerographic and ink-on-paper imaging. Dr. Crean’s more recent work, such as the initial operational capable prototype for the Xerox iGen3 imaging unit module, has assisted his company in being named the recipient for many of the industry’s awards. Many of the billons of printed pages Xerox technology produces a month are formed with Dr. Crean’s work.
Over the past six years, Dr. Crean has brought over 500 customers into the research labs to meet the researchers and share the excitement of the coming advances in digital color. He has spoken to thousands at Xerox-sponsored events and delivered presentations at the European Conference in 2003 and 2005 on Digital Production Printing and taken demonstrations to drupa 2000 and 2008 and PRINT 01 and PRINT 09. He has also spoken at three of the past On Demand Conferences about digital print technologies as well as the digital print market.
The Robert F. Reed Technology Medal will be presented to Dr. Crean at a banquet during the 62nd Annual Technical Conference of the Technical Association of the Graphic Arts (TAGA) on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at the Horton Grand Hotel in San Diego, CA.
