Harland Simon to Upgrade Press Control and Management Systems for Express Newspapers
Friday 04. December 2009 - Broughton Printers and Westferry Printers will become the latest production sites to benefit from Harland Simons Press Controls Upgrades , after placing orders with Harland Simon, the control system specialists.
At Broughton Printers in Preston the Prima management system hardware and application software will be upgraded to the latest specification. The Press Controls on one of the Goss Press Lines (four folders) will be upgraded to the latest PressNet specification, including new Prima 6000 Desks as well as creating additional operator stations with Touch Screen Monitors within the quiet room.
On the same four presses the existing obsolete folder plcs will be replaced with the latest processors. Also eight Goss CT45 Reelstands, all with original components will have their obsolete electronics replaced with industry standard parts and the Belt Drive upgraded with a modern thyristor controlled regulator.
Some of the key benefits include:
Replacement of at risk obsolete hardware
Improved press communication speed
Reduced splice and core waste
Improved reporting and diagnostics
At Westferry Printers a process of upgrading the Press Control System that started last year has been continued with Harland Simon providing the latest ink drop in modules on the Press Control Desks as well as upgrades to more Reelstand Controls.
The old operator interface ink modules have given many years of service but have become unreliable and difficult to repair in recent times. Last year three of these were successfully replaced with the latest technology drop in modules that are used on the Prima 6000 Desk. Harland Simon will be providing two more as part of this contract.
In parallel with this Harland Simon upgraded four Reelstands last year and this will take the total to seven. The benefits have already been appreciated by Westferry Printers, in terms of reliability and improved performance of the CT45s.
David Broadhurst, The Chief Executive Officer for both plants said “We knew that we needed to improve the press reliability, and remove our vulnerability to parts that are no longer available. We were pleased to find that Harland Simon could take care of this for us and that we could justify the investment in terms of improved performance reliability and quality.”
