Switzerlands Zürichsee-Zeitung-Verlagsgruppe produce 5 daily newspapers with QPS 8

Quark Inc. announced today that the Zürichsee-Zeitung-Verlagsgruppe (Lake Zurich Newspaper Publishing Group ZSZ) has chosen to upgrade to Quark Publishing System 8 (QPS 8). The ZSZ group, which publishes five daily regional newspapers, will be using the latest version of Quarks editorial workflow system with more than 100 seats to publish 45.000 newspapers on a daily basis.
Reliable System
“We considered a number of competitive publishing solutions, but we felt that QPS offered more in terms of reliability and speed. As with any daily paper, deadlines are extremely tight and there is simply no margin for any error. We have a large team of more than 100 editorial staff and freelance correspondents who deliver approximately 100 pages of editorial content daily across a number of locations. We needed a system that could manage this complex workflow system and most importantly, that would function without errors during the upgrade process,” said says Samuel Bachmann, Production and Technical Manager of the Zürichsee-Zeitung-Verlagsgruppe.
“We made the decision to upgrade to QPS 8 because as long-time Quark users, we are confident that it is both stable and reliable, which is hugely important in this environment. We need to be confident that everything will run smoothly and that we are going to get the paper out on time, as we have been doing five times a week for the ten past years. Having a reliable system allows us to focus on whats most important the editorial content of the publication,” added Bachmann.
Seamless Rapid Integration
The technical installation of QPS 8 was accomplished within a matter of minutes and the editors were completely up to speed on the new system after a mere three hours of training. Following a stress-free conversion of the entire editorial department, including external editorial staff, five other newspaper titles are currently being converted “in one go” to the new version of QPS.
Flexible Open System
“We knew that the QPS architecture was very modern and open, which means that further integration steps can be taken in the future,” says Bachmann. “We plan to make connections involving editors, databases, and server host solutions the usual requirements in the publishing business. We will now do this on a step-by-step basis.”
Quarks QPS integration offers complete freedom in terms of configuration. However, the handling of rights and access permissions, archives, and sources (i.e., the internal editorial organizational flow as well as the purely technical data workflow) must be organized down to the last detail. “It pays off in the long run,” say Bachmann and A&F Project Manager Alex Baschnagel.
