Neue Frutiger Typeface Family Joins the Linotype Library of Typefaces
Tuesday 04. August 2009 - Adrian Frutiger and Akira Kobayashi Collaborate to Enhance One of the Worlds Most Renowned Type Families
Monotype Imaging Holdings Inc., (Nasdaq: TYPE), a leading global provider of text imaging solutions, has announced the Neue Frutiger font family, a new member of the Linotype Library of typefaces. Designed by Akira Kobayashi, type director at Linotype GmbH, Monotype Imagings German-based subsidiary, and type designer Adrian Frutiger, the new family builds on the original 1977 Frutiger design, one of the best selling Linotype fonts of all time.
Neue Frutiger fonts can be previewed and licensed from the companys e-commerce sites: www.fonts.com, www.linotype.com, www.itcfonts.com and www.faces.co.uk.
“With 10 finely graded weights, each with corresponding italics, Neue Frutiger offers exceptional design flexibility,” said Allan Haley, director of words and letters at Monotype Imaging. “Neue Frutiger improves on the original Frutiger design in important areas, such as character spacing. Kobayashi and Frutiger, whos one of the great type designers of all time, also concentrated on enhancing character legibility at small sizes. These changes and other nuances combine to broaden design possibilities using Frutiger, which was created back in the 1970s with just one goal in mind – to meet signage requirements for the Charles-de-Gaulle Airport in Paris.”
The Neue Frutiger fonts were also created to be compatible with the original Frutiger face, as they share common character heights. “As a result, the older Frutiger styles can be enhanced by Neue Frutiger. Likewise, Neue Frutiger is perfect for use with Frutiger Serif,” said Haley.
All Neue Frutiger fonts include a collection of arrows based on templates drawn by Frutiger. Each suite of arrows is designed to harmonize with all Neue Frutiger fonts. The family also includes both tabular and proportionally spaced lining figures.
The Neue Frutiger typeface family is available in 10 weights ranging from ultra light to extra black, each with a corresponding italic. The fonts support 48 western, central and eastern European languages, including Baltic and Turkish. Neue Frutiger fonts are available in the OpenType cross-platform format and include OpenType features such as ligatures, small caps and several numerical figures.
