Monotype Imaging Adds Pair of New Typeface Families to the ITC Legacy Suite of Fonts

Tuesday 07. July 2009 - ITC Legacy Square Serif and ITC Legacy Serif Condensed Fonts Are Latest Members of ITC Collection

Monotype Imaging Holdings Inc. (Nasdaq: TYPE), a leading global provider of text imaging solutions, has added the seven-font ITC Legacy Square Serif and seven-font ITC Legacy Serif Condensed families to the company’s ITC font collection, extending the existing ITC Legacy suite to a total of 35 fonts. Created by award-winning type designer, Ronald Arnholm, the fonts can be viewed, licensed and downloaded from the company’s e-commerce sites: Fonts.com, ITCFonts.com, Linotype.com and Faces.co.uk.

“The new typefaces add up to what I call a typographic tour de force,” said Allan Haley, director of words and letters at Monotype Imaging. “The designs are not only extremely handsome but also highly versatile for a broad spectrum of creative projects. The spirit of Ron’s original ITC Legacy fonts is clearly evident in these new additions.”

Arnholm said, “It suddenly came to me out of the blue that a square serif design was needed to round out the ITC Legacy family. As for the condensed serif typefaces, they turned out to be natural complements to the normal weights and the sans serif condensed faces I drew earlier.”

The full ITC Legacy collection of fonts, which includes faces that first became available in the early 1990s, is based on the Eusebius typeface by Nicolas Jenson, the French engraver, printer and pioneer typographer who created the design centuries ago in 1470. Jenson’s original design featured distinctive slab serif shapes and asymmetrical foot serifs, which Arnholm carried over into his work. The new ITC Legacy Square Serif face was produced with square corners, which appear to soften at small sizes. “This makes it an ideal text face that melds with the other Legacy fonts in perfect harmony,” said Haley. “At large sizes, the personality of the face particularly shines through.”

Arnholm has designed more than 100 fonts that are available from Monotype Imaging’s e-commerce sites. He is an art professor at the University of Georgia, Lamar Dodd School of Art.
