Neue Westfälische in Bielefeld chooses new printing technology from WIFAG
Monday 06. July 2009 - Beginning April 2010 two 32-page printing presses will be installed a section at a time at the printing center of the Neue Westfälische newspaper, which is located on the premises of J.D. Küster Nachf. und Presse Druck GmbH & Co. KG in Bielefeld-Sennestadt; ongoing operations will not be interrupted, and the new machines replace three existing rotary presses.
The changeover will be completed by March 2011 and ensures that two sections will always be available for the production of over 170,000 newspapers daily, including the sixteen-edition Neue Westfälische Zeitung, the Haller Kreisblatt as well as weekly newspapers and newspaper-like products.
After nine months of intensive evaluation of various printing presses from leading manufacturers, coupled with reference visits to a number of newspaper printing operations, it became apparent that WIFAG offered the overall best choice. The decision was based on a number of factors, one of which was economic – the WIFAG solution exhibits the best price-to-performance ratio over an expected term of fifteen years.
The two sections consist of four WIFAG evolution 473/4 printing towers (9-cylinder satellite units featuring a 4×2 configuration) with fully automatic plate changers, two KF 140 2:5:5 folders and four WIFAG autopaster A 50 reelstands. The central control console and production planning system are supplied by ABB.
The reelstands and daily storage unit are fed fully automatically.
