Oce Supports Evolving Newspaper Market as a Sponsor of Third Individuated Newspaper Conference

Thursday 18. June 2009 - Oce demonstrates leadership and opportunities in short-run digital newspaper printing

Oce, an international leader in digital document management and delivery, announced that it is one of the sponsors of the third Individuated News Conference (INC3) as part of the company’s continued support of the evolving newspaper publishing model. Oce is the market leader in short-run digital newspaper printing, with 98 percent of the world’s contracted newspapers running on Oce presses. The global conference runs June 24-26, 2009 and will be hosted at The Washington Times facility in Washington, D.C. Other INC3 sponsors include Newspapers & Technology magazine and Accrisoft Software.

Under continued assault from competing media like cable television, the Internet, all-news radio and changing work and lifestyle patterns, the newspaper industry is under pressure to win back readers, increase circulation, and grow advertising revenue. As the newspaper industry searches for ways to reinvent itself, many experts believe the future lies in personalization. INC3 provides an invaluable opportunity for participants to learn about the challenges, opportunities and methodologies available to turn individuated news into a profitable reality.

“As newspaper publishers look for additional income streams in an increasingly tough marketplace, individuation of newspapers represents a promising new business model. Customers can capture new revenue opportunities by producing short run, ‘hyper-localized’ editions that offer targeted advertising,” said Sheryl Pattek. Vice President, Marketing Services, Oce North America, Inc, Production Printing Systems division. “The INC3 event is an important platform for the latest thinking in this exciting trend in newspaper publishing, and Oce is pleased to contribute as a sponsor and participant.”

The conference will gather innovators, thought leaders, publishers, technology experts and print providers to exchange ideas and develop a direction for the future of the news personalization. With the goal of defining new opportunities for the industry, the event will explore print-centric business models and enabling technologies for individuated newspapers and ancillary products. Digital printing technologies play an important role in providing totally variable, consumer-selected media. Oce technology has already produced more than 20 million newspapers worldwide, a number that is growing with market adoption of very high speed Oce JetStream(R) inkjet color systems.

“Automated processes for individualized newspapers is a reality, and Oce is committed to helping publishers find success with this new approach,” said Duncan Newton, Ph.D., Manager, Business Development, Oce North America, Production Printing Systems division. “In one example, subscribers choose from a database of several hundred different pages. Individual editions are automatically complied by Oce software and ripped at night. Then they are produced on the fly by Oce digital print systems.”

As the concepts of micro-zoning and individuation become more top-of-mind in the print news media, Oce is ready to provide assistance and expertise. A featured speaker at INC3, Newton will present practical ideas and strategies to support emerging opportunities on Thursday, June 25 from 1 -2 PM.
