The Washington Post and Slate Pull Back the Curtain to Show Readers Innovations in Online Publishing

Monday 15. June 2009 - "Innovations in News" Special Section Includes Behind-the-Scenes Look at Creative Process

The Washington Post and Slate today launch “Innovations in News,” a special section that invites readers to experience the latest innovations in online video, photo mosaics, interactive graphics and more.

The Post and Slate created one home for their interactive features to offer a behind-the-scenes look at how different projects are created, including:

3-D Video Navigator that allows for more control and easy movement, inviting users to manage their visual experience individually or across multiple videos. The video player is aptly called “Fluid,” a name given by The Post developers who created the product.
Photo Mosaics that let readers interact with photography in a new way using Microsoft Live Labs Sea Dragon technology.
Special data-driven tools that tell stories using figures and facts. For example, the Box Office Tracker on Slate’s business site, The Big Money, measures whether critical analysis affect box-office sales.
“The Washington Post is a news organization that produces not only world-class journalism but also unique, savvy interactive features. Like other major media technology companies, we’re excited to showcase what goes into our finished products and demonstrate how news publishers help shape the future of the Web,” said Raju Narisetti, Managing Editor, The Washington Post.

“We are passionate about creating new things and are excited to involve our readers throughout the creative process. Creating a home for our slick, fun tools allows us to further the discussion on innovation,” added David Plotz, Slate’s editor.

On behalf of the third-generation Prius launch, Toyota was a key partner in the development of a collaborative space for the interactive features and innovative tools created by the editorial teams from The Washington Post and Slate.

“Our Prius customer is an avid reader of online news. For the third-generation Prius launch, we’re giving people new interactive tools to help them get more out of their news,” said Kim McCullough, Corporate Manager, Marketing Communications, Toyota.

Innovations in News will be updated regularly and will allow readers to post comments and interact with journalists and developers across the two sites.

This week, Innovations in News features a video from Slate V’s “Killer Apps” series, where technology writer Farhad Manjoo reviews the latest gadget. The photo mosaic includes a collection of hundreds of animal photos from around the world.
