Expert Meeting on Aerosol Innovation
Wednesday 25. March 2009 - Aerosol Forum 2010 In Progress
The third edition of Aerosol Forum dedicated to Aerosol packaging innovation was held on the 10th and 11th March 2009 in Paris, at the Cité des Sciences et de lIndustrie. The meeting was attended by over 600 participants from some twenty countries, representing the leading international brands and their packaging suppliers (about thirty exhibitors).
« Aerosol Forum is an extraordinary opportunity to meet our suppliers and colleagues in the area
» Charles Duclaux, LOréal
« Aerosol Forum is going to be the key event of the Aerosol industry
» Heinz Melcher, Aerosol Europe
This 3rd edition of Aerosol Forum enabled participants to discover the latest packaging developments and innovations at the exhibition, a genuine technological showcase. The lectures took stock of issues linked to sustainable development, artwork techniques and the art of spray.
Prospects for aerosol packaging development were the focal point of exchanges. Health and food product markets seem particularly promising. For the 4th edition, in March 2010, a session will be devoted to health product packaging and delivery and the “Paris Aerosol Restaurant” will enable participants to take stock of the situation in the “food” sector.
Sustainable development, a core issue!
In his opening address, Charles Duclaux, LOréal, shared his viewpoint on the stakes and challenges of environmental labelling over the years to come. The goal is to give consumers the level of environmental information they want to make their purchases. Having set the tone, the ensuing presentations:
Henri-Marc de Montalembert, CFA, France, described an eco-design software for analysing the environmental impact of several aerosol packaging options, a genuine tool to implement a « sustainable development » strategy ;
Virginie Fourneau, Avantec, France, a real expert in the field, enabled us to take stock of the status and implication of Reach for the Aerosols industry ;
Tim Martinez, Koenig & Vits, USA, gave us an overview of the supply chain to make a “pure-13 aluminium” product ;
Emmanuel Perret, Boxal, France, focussed most of his presentation on the « environmental accountability » of aerosol can materials and alloys. He dealt, in particular, with material recyclability, the use of environmentally neutral components, new types of coatings, etc.
Henri-Léonard Mylne, Power Container, USA, discussed the assets of BOV in terms of environmental impact, conservation of the packaged product and dispensing ;
René Bommer, PharmAccel consulting, Germany, addressed alternative technologies and delivery devices for liquid formulations, in particular a propellant-free electronic aerosol technology that provides for more compact packaging.
To end this first morning of lectures, Jean-Noël Galtier, official lOréal hairstylist, gave us a demonstration of « The art of hairstyling» using “Live” models, attendees of both sexes who kindly volunteered for the demonstration. He highlighted the magic of Aerosol technology for hairsprays, hair gloss, hair styling foams, etc.
This activity was followed by the official opening of the ColepCCL stand by Heinz Melcher, Aerosol Europe, and Josette Appert, Aerosol Forum. The goal was to underscore the acquisition of CZEWO. The cocktail party for participants offered by ColepCCL was followed by lunch.$
The afternoon session, chaired by Jay Gouliard, Vice President Global Packaging, Unilever, focussed on design, eco-design and artwork techniques for Aerosol cans. Jay Gouliard shared his vision of « Sustainable development, a new space for innovation!». The ensuing papers took stock of aerosol can design and environmental compatibility.
Leopold Werdich, Tubex, Germany, in his lecture « How to dress your product for success », described the various artwork techniques that make a product on the shelf distinctive at the time of purchase. He discussed the state-of-the-art of printing and varnishing, forming and embossing techniques for aerosol cans, taking account of environmental compatibility.
Katja Glöckler, ColepCCL, Germany, addressed the impact of design on purchasing and the fact that design is a source of innovation. She gave us a look into the future with a project for a refillable aerosol equipped with an electronic spray for cleaning hands.
Dirk Schwung, Boxal, Netherlands, described the new high definition artwork and digital printing techniques in addition to the forming possibilities they afford the designer, in order to meet the Brands demand for distinctiveness.
Franck Flécheux, Aerocan, France, took stock of aerosol can artwork technologies and trends taking account of the appearance/environmental compatibility ratio.
Sharon Jackson, Leading Edge Labels and Packaging, United Kingdom, completed this overview of « Design and Aerosol decoration technology » with a presentation on the advantages of “wraps”.
Philippe Morel, Sleever International, France, described the use of sleeves to decorate an aerosol.
To wind up this first day of the conference, Christian Derambure enthralled participants with his paper on « The process of innovation and protection of intellectual property », sharing his expert knowledge in this field and thoughts on the opportunities afforded by sustainable development.
The wealth of friendly exchanges continued over drinks in the exhibition area to close this first day.
On Wednesday, 11th March, Thibault de Maillard, SOPPEC, France, chaired the session on the art of spray and foam. He shared his vision of aerosol as a “modern” packaging, his knowledge of the technologies used to respect safety and the environment, in addition to the new “technical applications” markets. Having set the tone, the ensuing presentations:
Adalberto Geier, Coster, Italy, gave a fascinating lecture on the process of developing BOV and advantages of this technology.
Jacques Keldenich, Nussbaum & Guhl, Netherlands, took stock of « Can-in-can »; he described the technical performances of this innovative technology, implementation and present and future uses.
Sébastien Gaspari, Aerocan, France, described the development of piston can technology and its applications. The part of his paper on future prospects for this technology was particularly interesting.
Philip Brand, Lindal, Germany, addressed the range of uses of Truspray technology and its considerable potential for reducing the size of aerosol cans.
Ric Berger, Clayton, USA, focussed his outstanding presentation on the very technical, but essential point of valve crimping.
Richard Garon, Spraylogik Ltd, Canada gave a brilliant paper on the combination of electronics and aerosols in addition to the possibilities afforded by micro-reservoirs. He set participants thinking about an infinite field of applications.
Manel Torres, Fabrican, United Kingdom, focussed his paper on Spray-on fabrics, a particularly innovating technology for fashion, textiles, health and dressings for example.
