Choice Hotels Selects HP Security Appliance to Automate Compliance Processes, Reduce Risk

Thursday 19. March 2009 - HP today announced that Choice Hotels International, Inc. selected the HP Compliance Log Warehouse (CLW) 2.0 to address regulatory demands and reduce risk to its business.

HP CLW 2.0 provides real-time collection, storage and retrieval of network activity logs to detect unusual events that could lead to a security breach. The data management appliance consolidates event logs across the enterprise – applications, databases and unstructured data – to provide a single view of activity within a network.

Choice Hotels, one of the largest lodging franchisors in the world, selected HP CLW with the primary goal of automating network analysis and compliance reporting to meet Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) regulations. More than 5,800 Choice brand hotels worldwide rely on HP CLW to identify internal violations and external threats in real time.

The CLW allows Choice Hotels to retain and query up to one year of its event logs, which is the requirement for compliance set by PCI DSS.

“HP Compliance Log Warehouse enables Choice Hotels to more easily identify malicious network activity, protect intellectual property and increase productivity at a lower cost to the business than the manual systems that we previously relied on,” said Chad Mason, director, Test Engineering, Choice Hotels. “With an intuitive user interface and simple reporting, we are able to monitor, manage and gain unmatched insight into a high volume of event logs from a variety of sources that support sensitive consumer transactions throughout the organization.”

Based on industry-standard HP Integrity technologies, HP CLW offers advanced configuration tools on an easy to deploy and manage appliance platform.

HP CLW eases regulatory pressures while lowering total cost of ownership

Part of the HP Secure Advantage portfolio, HP CLW 2.0 collects, stores and analyzes data created by a myriad of systems in an enterprise. These include application logins, failed login attempts and software changes to management logs.

As a result, customers can automate compliance reporting to meet a variety of industry and government standards, including Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX), the Heath Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council standard (FFIEC). In addition, powerful clustering technologies in the HP CLW enable systems to be easily scaled to meet increasing data retention needs.

“Today’s regulations often include capturing event-based data, requiring companies to begin or expand their approach to log management,” said Jon Oltsik, senior analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. “HP Compliance Log Warehouse offers a complete log management solution that ensures visibility throughout the organization – simply and cost-effectively – providing comprehensive insight into operations and security events, while helping organizations meet increasingly challenging regulatory demands.”

The HP CLW appliance also features interoperability with McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) software, used today as the single security management platform for many enterprises. The combination of the McAfee ePO platform with the features and storage density of HP CLW provides a broader, comprehensive view of network activity in the enterprise.

The combined solution simplifies problem reporting and determination while enabling users to meet compliance regulations. Users of both products will benefit from advanced daily audit reporting capabilities, faster search through stored log data, and options to take action by adjusting security policies.
