Cannon Valley Printing Reduces Costs, Increases Image Quality with Kodaks Ink Optimizing Service for Newspapers
Tuesday 24. February 2009 - Cannon Valley Printing, a newspaper printer in Minnesota, now lowers ink consumptionand produces sharper images without any changes to its workflowusing KODAKs Ink Optimizing Service. The new service decreases ink consumption, reduces waste and makeready time, enhances reproduction fidelity, and improves stability on press.
With the KODAK Ink Optimizing Service, Kodak provides customers with an ICC DeviceLink profile that gets plugged into the KODAK PRINERGY EVO Workflow. Based on the ICC DeviceLink profile, separated image files go through a gray component removal (GCR) process that reduces ink usage by replacing CMY inks with less expensive black ink, while limiting the Total Area Coverage (TAC) to a predefined level.
“With the Ink Optimizing Service, we no longer have many of the reproduction quality issues caused by images that come in without proper editing,” said Roger Stolley, General Manager of Cannon Valley Printing, a division of Mainstream Publications LLC in Northfield, Minn. “Weve seen substantial improvements to the quality of photographs printed in our newspapers and realized significant savings on ink.”
GCR reduces ink consumption by up to 25 percent, depending on image content. Using KODAK STACCATO Screening makes additional ink reduction possible.
Cannon Valley Printing produces two daily newspapers, the Owatonna Peoples Press and the Faribault Daily News and 14 weekly publications for its parent company. It also produces 30 non-owned weekly, bi-monthly and monthly publications.
“Deadline driven, high volume environments such as Cannon Valley Printing continually seek solutions to streamline production and enhance efficiency,” said Steve Miller, Newspaper Workflow Product Manager. “The Ink Optimizing Service extends the automation benefits of a fully integrated workflow enabled by the PRINERGY EVO Workflow.”
In addition to the PRINERGY EVO Workflow, Cannon Valley Printing utilizes two KODAK TRENDSETTER NEWS Thermal Platesetters, KODAK NS Digital Newspaper Plates, and STACCATO Screening capabilities.
