Metso’s paper testing laboratory wins Fennia Prize 2009 design award

Monday 23. February 2009 - The new-generation kajaaniPaperLab automated paper testing laboratory from Metso has been granted the Fennia Prize 2009 product design award on February 19, 2009.

The Fennia Prize is a competition for companies rewarding the exemplary use and application of design in business. The total prize sum to be distributed in two competition series is EUR 35,000. The competition is organized every second year by Design Forum Finland, Fennia and Kauppalehti.

Key design features of the new-generation kajaaniPaperLab are modularity and scalability: the goal was to design a flexible device that responds to the industry’s demands for enhanced productivity.

Available in many sizes, kajaaniPaperLab is a compact device that frees up more space in the lab and is also easy to take next to the production line. Its new design takes ergonomics and ease of use to a new sophisticated level. Many new safety features, for example the automatic module frame opener, make operation easier so that all users need not to be highly skilled laboratory personnel.

Suitable for testing all grades of paper and board, kajaaniPaperLab offers the widest selection of industry-standard tests for over 400 properties. Testing can be done equally well in laboratory or at the production line. When used at-line, the machine operation team can run the most critical tests on their own for 24/7 and keep machine operation on-spec, as results transfer immediately to the automation system for process management control purposes.

Automated testing enables more frequent, accurate and repeatable test results. With these, a mill can quickly make necessary adjustments and get back to running paper production on-spec. This is directly linked to optimal raw material and energy utilization as well as minimized environmental impact.

As a vital part of validating the product value from the process, kajaaniPaperLab complies with the most rigorous testing standards and calibration procedures of ISO 9000 quality certification.
