The fifth edition of the PCD congress (Perfumes, Cosmetics & Design) on packaging innovation for cosmetics and perfumes was held on the 3rd and 4th February 2009 in Paris. This meeting brought together 1200 participants from about thirty countries representing leading international brands and their packaging suppliers (some sixty exhibitors).

The official opening of the 5th edition by the conference Presidents enabled participants to view the latest « sustainable development and environment-packaging compatibility » packaging developments and innovations in perfumes and cosmetics at the exhibition, a genuine technological showcase.

A hot topic !
The genuinely state-of-the-art lectures raised awareness of the complexity of the issue of « sustainable development » in terms of the « eco-design » of packaging, the production of raw materials, processing, surface treatments, packaging and processes, the supply chain, end-of-life and recycling of packaging. The social dimension within companies in addition to consumer education are built into this approach.
In his opening address, Mr. Alain Béthune, LOréal, shared his view :
« Far from from acting as a brake on innovation, environmental issues constitute an asset for enterprises as they stimulate competitiveness and point to new avenues for packaging development
».
Mr. Charles Duclaux, LOréal, described the challenges for stakeholders in the cosmetics industry and the prospects for information offered by these two days. In conclusion, he recalled the quote from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry :
« We do not inherit the land of our ancestors, we borrow it from our children
»
Having set the tone, papers by PriceWaterHouseCoopers, BASF – The Chemical Company, Prof. Stéphane Guilbert, INRA, Montpellier, Henkel of America, Sappi Fine Paper Europe and ColorMatrix Group Inc. gave participants concrete avenues of work to implement sustainable development procedures in their respective companies.
For brands, as for their packaging suppliers, it is a long-term endeavour that calls for considerable skills in order intelligently to meet their clients’, consumers’ concern. Charles Duclaux commented :
“PCD is an ideal, privileged place to discover innovations by our suppliers, meet colleagues and attend a series of fascinating lectures .”
After lunch, at the opening of his session, Michel Dupuis (Chanel) shared his line of reasoning and company approach. By way of introduction, he defined the fundamentals : “Where to start ?”, and, as a conclusion to his speech, he proposed “An example of an ideal « carbon plan » “. A magnificent lesson !
With Bormioli Rocco & Figlio, we went on to a new paradigm – bottle decoration; SGD informed us of the prospects offered by « Infinite Glass » ; then, Heinz Glass described innovation in tampoprinting processes in addition to new possibilities for artwork ; Valois, in the area of pumps, took stock of spray, design aspects and also respect for the environment.
To wind up this first part, Sleever International presented its « sustainable development through innovation » approach.
After the break, Seidel Gmbh & Co introduced us to the prospects for appearance and touch afforded by nanotechnologies, while respecting the environment.
Socoplan explained the evolution of its business model linked to the introduction of clean technologies. Iggessund Paperboard described its programme for zero fossil CO2 emission invercote cardboard production.
With ATT, we took stock of innovative traceability systems and smart packaging.
Mathias Welp from Edelmann gave us a comprehensive overview of their study on « multi-sensorial packaging and innovations » for the decoration of folding cartons.
To wind up this second part, Arjo Wiggins Security showed us how, with its Securimatrix technology, it was possible to add functions and means of fighting counterfeit to packaging while at the same time limiting the impact on the environment.
Speaking of innovation raises the issue of intellectual property. Christian Derambure shared his expert knowledge in this field; his thoughts about the opportunities afforded by sustainable development keenly interested the participants. Jean-Louis Mathiez, on the basis of a particularly topical example, « vibrating mascaras…. », confirmed the priority given by brands to eco-design and explained the advantages of proper patent base use.
The wealth of friendly exchanges continued over drinks in the exhibition area to wrap up this first day.
Hervé Bouix, The Estée Lauder companies, opened the second day with the session « Make-up : packaging innovations and taking into account the environment ». During his statement, he described his company’s policy in terms of eco-design and packaging recyclability. In conclusion, he shared his thoughts on innovation and this « cosmetics & electronic devices » trend.
PriceWaterhouseCoopers focussed its statement on the particularly complex aspect of sustainable development « labelling » on mass market products.
On behalf of Alcan Packaging Beauty, Nick Thorne described the thought process and technologies used to make luxury, but environmentally friendly, packaging.
Graindorge explained how to replace hexavalent chromium with trivalent chromium while preserving part appearance and strength. With Oekametall, we learned how innovation in vacuum metallising and varnishing makes it possible to respect the environment.
Then, Cosmogen, with the concrete example of PumpN Tint, explained how it incorporated the concept of eco-design in new make-up products.
The ensuing break was a privileged moment for exchanges, meeting the speakers and visiting the exhibition. Then, RPC beauté looked at how luxury and sustainable development can be reconciled.
Eric Goyer, Taiki Cosmetics Europe, invited us to discover the technologies used to make applicators intelligent, strategic parts in cosmetics. Cerfoils presented a new hot-stamping technology that is most relevant for « make-up » artwork and combatting counterfeit while limiting the environmental footprint.
To finish the morning with a « flourish », the PCD Awards 2009 ceremony, a bumper year !
« These prizes rewarded products placed on the European market between the 1st December 2007 and the 30th November 2008. «
Charles Pileur, Packaging Director, YSL Beauté, and member of the PCD Awards Jury, pointed out :
« The 2009 PCD Awards is an exceptional year owing both to the range of products listed by the jury and the high technological standard of the processes used, to such an extent that the members of the jury decided to give three special distinctions in addition to the 8 awards » stressed Charles Pileur. « The fact PCD is becoming an annual event as of this edition is fully in keeping with the dynamic momentum of packaging innovation in the sector. »
Evelyne Dreyfus, Beauty-Health Journalist, and Noëlle Baticle, Beauty Journalist, stressed the quality of the products competing for the PCD Awards, particularly « the make-up products and perfumes. »
By way of introduction, the Jury underscored and congratulated the Brands on the efforts made to ensure Packaging-Environment compatibility. The Jury awarded a special distinction to the « Culture Bio » range by Yves Rocher.
In the « Care » category, the 2009 PCD Award went to the packaging of « Blanc Expert GN-White » by Lancôme.
In the « Eye Make-Up » category, after lengthy, complex discussions, the 2009 PCD Award went to two mascaras :
« PhenomenEyes » by Givenchy, and,
« Exceptionnel » by Chanel
In the « Lip Make-Up » category, the 2009 PCD Award went to « Sweet Kiss » by Bourjois.
In the « Other Make-Up » category, the 2009 PCD Award went to a device limiting powder and make-up breakage, used for the product « Shimmer Brick Compact » by Bobbi Brown.
The Jury wished to award a Special Distinction to « Soleil dAfrique, Poudre Collector » by YSL Beauté.
In the « Women’s » Perfume category, the 2009 PCD Award went to « Magnifique » by Lancôme.
The Jury wished to award a Special Distinction, for outstanding work, to « Féerie » by Van Cleef & Arpels.
In the « Men’s » Perfume category, the 2009 PCD Award went to the packaging of « Roadster » by Cartier.
The Jury wished to underscore the quality of the work done for « Allure Homme, édition blanche » by Chanel by awarding a Special Distinction.
After lunch, Osnat Lustig, Coty Europe Beauty, opened the session on hygiene, beauty, health, body care by introducing the issue of water, its use and scarcity, in this series of lectures.
Dupont de Nemours took stock of Surlyn (R) technology for new bottle designs; Somater Conditionnements described the importance of eco-design in plastic bottles and the means they use as of the initial marketing brief; Neopac Packaging Solutions presented the range of innovative technologies in the manufacturing of attractive tubes for cosmetics; Alcan Packaging Beauty covered the innovations and processes implemented to make attractive, environmentally friendly tubes.
In conclusion, Pfeiffer gave its analysis of the consequences of this new state of affairs in the body care segment and, as a follow-up, Rexam Airspray took stock of foam pump technology and performance.
PCD 2009 finished with cocktails and friendly exchanges among the participants and Valois shared its opinion of these two days.

The sixth edition of PCD is being prepared for Tuesday 26th and Wednesday 27th January 2010 in Paris. The core theme of the lectures will be sustainable development. For the sessions on make-up, perfumes, hygiene, beauty and body care, emphasis will be placed on « multi-sensory packaging », « active packaging» and « customisation ».
