OKI Printing Solutions Turns All Energy Green at Scottish Facility

Thursday 15. January 2009 - OKI (UK) Ltd. has entered an agreement with Scottish Power to source renewable energy for routine power consumption. Under the agreement, OKI will receive 3.6 million kWh of green power a year enabling the facility to contribute its 85% reduction in the use of non-renewable energy to the UK's, and so our planet's C02 reduction targets.

Based in Cumbernauld, Scotland, OKI (UK) Ltd. is responsible for configuring all OKI Printing Solutions’ printers and fax machines and manufacturing toner and ribbons for the EMEA market. OKI (UK) Ltd. has achieved an outstanding reputation for quality and performance within the electronics industry.

OKI (UK) Ltd. has always used Scottish Power as its electricity supplier. The agreement is part of Scottish Power’s Green Power Program, through which it promotes the use of wind power: an ideal source of renewable energy due to the country’s strong coastal winds. Scottish Power is the UK’s largest generator of energy using wind turbines, with the majority of its renewable energy coming from this source, some is sourced from Scottish hydro-electric schemes and a small proportion from biomass.

OKI (UK) Ltd. has been able to keep the costs of switching to green energy under control by qualifying for an exemption from the “climate change levy” – a tax on the use of energy in industry, commerce and the public sector.

The aim of the levy is to encourage users to improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It is one of a range of measures designed to help the UK meet its legally binding commitment to reduce these emissions.

Harushige Sugimoto, president and CEO of OKI Data Corporation, OKI (UK) Ltd.’s parent company, says: “We are delighted with this agreement with Scottish Power which underlines our commitment to tackling climate change. As a part of this plan, we plan to reduce CO2 emissions from all OKI Data Group activities by 6 per cent by FY2012, compared to the corresponding figure achieved in FY2007. Switching to green power is part of this effort to meet the target. Other measures include optimised supply chain management which we will continue to work on throughout the next fiscal year.”

Scottish Power has issued OKI (UK) Ltd. with a Certificate of Green Power to verify the actual use of wind power.
