PCD- How innovations in packaging and dispensing systems Enhance Perfumes and Cosmetics Brands
Thursday 08. January 2009 - In the space of just 18 months, sustainable development has become a major headline in the news. A massive wave of information is constantly disseminated by associations and the media. It is a complex topic, and the first stage consists in ascertaining what exactly we are talking about.
Thus, in conjunction with Brand environment experts and their packaging suppliers (primary, secondary, tertiary packaging, labels, inserts, etc.), the decision was taken to make “Sustainable development”, “Environment – Packaging Compatibility” the core theme of the 5th edition of PCD (Perfumes, Cosmetics & Design), which will be held in Paris on the 3rd and 4th February.
Mrs. Nathalie KOSCIUSKO-MORIZET, Secretary of State under the State Minister, minister for Ecology, Sustainable Development and Planning, in charge of Ecology, France, has agreed officially to open this edition.
The first session will address « Sustainable Development, responsible development ». It will be chaired by Mssrs. Alain Béthune, Packaging Research Director HBC, and Charles Duclaux, Packaging and Environment Manager, DGO, L’Oréal, France. Papers by Price Waterhouse Coopers, BASF, will enable us:
– To clarify the terminology and the concepts: « Carbon Foot Print », « LCA », « Eco-design », « Environmental compatibility », « Environmental labelling », etc.
– To view eco-design as a means of deploying a “sustainable development” strategy;
– To take stock of plastic materials used in the cosmetics industry, to establish a link between materials, consumer expectations in terms of Design and Packaging – Environment compatibility.
The break will give participants time for exchanges and provide an opportunity to visit the exhibition right next to the lecture hall. Papers by SupAgro, Henkel, Sappi Fine Paper, ColorMatrix Group Inc and Unilever will then follow on:
– Plastics based on renewable resources: where are we now? This lecture will take stock of these materials, which are generally called « bio-plastics »;
– Henkels « Sustainable Development » approach, based on three pillars « protection of the environment », « social progress » and « economic success » ;
– Sustainable development, for the enterprise, is a long-term commitment. But what strategy should be implemented with a view to this long-term future when producing packaging materials?
– How to optimize progress in colour development technologies, accelerate packaging design and prototyping processes and respect the environment?
To close this first morning of lectures, Jay Gouliard, Vice President Global Packaging, Unilever, will share his vision of « Sustainablility : a new space for innovation » :
”I personally view sustainability as the opening of a new space for innovation – a new way to look at our world that takes us well beyond the traditional way of looking at material reductions and cost savings. It is an opportunity to explore new materials, to explore new relationships between primary and secondary materials, and to explore new interactions between product and package throughout the entire life cycle. Where some see bureaucracy, difficulties, and more work, I see the opportunity for us to demonstrate our collective innovation power in Unilever packaging.”
Lunch will then give participants an opportunity to exchange, meet the speakers and exhibitors before the afternoon session on perfume packaging. It will be chaired by Mr. Michel Dupuis, Product development and purchasing strategy Director, Chanel, who will share his vision of « Sustainable development, responsible development! ». He will be followed by Heinz Glass France, SGD, Valois, Sleever International, who will enable us to take stock of:
– Advances in the manufacturing of glass bottles ;
– Innovations in terms of bottle decoration and respect for the environment ;
– Spray and technical developments introduced by pump manufacturers ;
After the break, papers by Seidel GmbH + Co, Flexpaq, Iggesund Paperboard, ATT Advanced Track & Trace, Edelmann and Arjo Wiggins Security will round off this overview of « Perfumes and environmentally compatible packaging”:
– Surface treatments;
– Regulatory constraints and VOC decomposition technologies used to print samples ;
– The manufacturing of secondary packaging materials without any Co2 emissions ;
– Printing techniques and advanced finishing techniques that provide a host of visual effects while respecting the environment ;
– Techniques for brand protection and the inclusion of new customer services.
To wind up this first day, Mssrs. Christian Derambure, DERAMBURE Conseil, Industrial Property Attorney, President, CNCPI (Compagnie Nationale des Conseils en Propriété Industrielle), and Jean-Louis Mathiez, President, CinqPats, will share their experience of « Sustainable development and intellectual property ».
Wednesday 4th February, Mr. Hervé Bouix, Corporate Vice President Packaging New Ventures & Special Projects, The Estée Lauder Companies Inc., USA, will open the session on make-up. Speakers from PWC (PricewaterhouseCoopers), Alcan Packaging Beauty, Graindorge SAS, OKEAMETALL, Cosmogen, RPC Bramlage-Wiko, TAIKI Cosmetics Europe and Cerfoils SAS will share their experience of:
– Environmental labelling both in terms of standards and French and international experiences;
– Lines of thought and technologies used to reconcile the “luxury” expectations of consumers and their awareness of issues linked to the « environment » ;
– Implementation of technologies in the field of surface treatments and marking ;
– Integration of functions, like refillable products or eco-design by reducing the consumption of materials and optimising the supply chain.
A break will enable participants to exchange and complete their information by visiting the exhibition. The « PCD Awards ceremony » will then close the morning.
After lunch, Mrs. Osnat LUSTIG, VP Packaging Development, COTY EUROPE BEAUTY SA, will share her thoughts on water and its use. Indeed, it is an essential ingredient both for the manufacturing of cosmetics and the survival of species. Papers will then be given by Du Pont de Nemours, Somater, Neopac Packaging Solutions, Pfeiffer, Alcan Packaging Beauty and Rexam Airspray B.V, which will cover, in the area of « Hygiene, beauty, body care »:
– The possibilities of new materials in the manufacturing of tubes and bottles;
– The reduction of materials at source, the resulting energy savings, taking into account packaging performance in terms of preserving and protecting the product and providing for its proper use ;
– Innovations in the field of artwork and « Dispensing systems ».
These two days of lectures and the exhibition will enable Brand packaging experts and their suppliers to take stock of technological developments, clarify concepts, and identify prospects. It is important to underscore the “sustainable development” design of PCD at all stages in its organisation – energy savings, use of recyclable materials – and its staging – ready access by public transport, limitation of size, etc.
