ALTON DULANEY CROWNED SCOTCH BRAND MOST GIFTED WRAPPER
Tuesday 09. December 2008 - Wraps Up $10,000 Grand Prize in 12th Annual National Gift-Wrapping Contest
Alton DuLaney, a gift-wrapping extraordinaire from New York, N.Y., of Kates Paperie, was crowned “Scotch Brand Most Gifted Wrapper” for 2008 in a national gift-wrapping contest sponsored by 3M, the maker of Scotch brand tape.
Amid throngs of holiday revelers at Rockefeller Center today, DuLaney out wrapped seven other gift-wrapping experts to earn a $10,000 cash prize. With Scotch tape in hand, DuLaney and his worthy competitors wrapped up the ultimate odd-shaped gifts – a three tiered candy dish, a set of golf clubs in a caddy bag and finally, a baby grand piano – with flair and style.
DuLaneys gift-wrapping motto is: “No exposed edges, crisp corners and tight folds.” He adds, “Always measure your paper carefully and use a Scotch paper cutter for clean lines.”
The first runner-up, Megumi Lorna Inouye from San Francisco, Calif., received a $2,500 cash prize. The other six contestants received smaller cash prizes as well. Contestants were judged on three criteria: appearance, technique and speed.
The judging panel consisted of three experts in the art of gift-wrapping: Wanda Wen, co-owner of Soolip Paperie & Press and wrapper for many of Hollywoods A-list celebrities; Mark Ski, former producer for Martha Stewart Living and Gina Tepper, gift-wrapping expert from GiftDecorating.com.
