PCD: How innovations in packaging and dispensing systems Enhance Perfumes and Cosmetics Brands
Friday 05. December 2008 - The 5th edition of the PCD congress-exhibition (Perfumes, Cosmetics & Design) will address the issues of sustainable development and respect for the environment in packaging.
It will be held on the 3rd and 4th of February, 2009, at the Cité des Sciences et de lIndustrie, in Paris. This international meeting of experts in perfumes and cosmetics packaging will bring together:
– 1400 Packaging (Innovation, Development and Purchasing), R&D and Marketing Managers from some forty countries, for the Brands ;
– And their main suppliers of packaging (materials, processing, artwork, etc.), technologies and services.
Tuesday, 3rd February, 2009
Mrs. Nathalie KOSCIUSKO-MORIZET, Secretary of State under the State minister, minister for the ecology, sustainable development and planning, in charge of ecology, France, will officially open this 5th edition.
Mr. Alain Béthune, Packaging Research Director, LOréal, together with Mr. Charles Duclaux, Packaging & Environment Manager, DGO – Packaging L’ORÉAL, will chair and open the 1st session « Sustainable Development, responsible development ».
– A presentation will then be given by Philippe OSSET, Senior Manager Sustainable Development, PRICE WATERHOUSE COOPERS, France, who will explain how to use eco-design to roll out a sustainable development strategy ;
– Anne-Sophie Roidot, Sales Representative Spain and France, BASF – The Chemical Company, will deal with innovative prospects linked to the use of plastics in cosmetics design ;
After the morning break, Pr Stéphane Guilbert, Joint Research Unit “Agropolymers Engineering and Emerging Technologies”; Montpellier SupAgro, INRA, will address the biodegradability of plastic components : elastomers, polyolefins
.and take stock of prospects opened up by bioplastics in reducing CO2 emissions in the atmosphere ;
Eric Scheid, Packaging Purchasing, Henkel of America, USA, will share his vision of the role of purchasing in Henkels sustainable development approach, which is based on environmental, social and economic factors;
– Antoine de Forton, Business Development Manager, Sappi Fine Paper Europe Head Office, will discuss the implementation of a sustainable development policy in papermaking in order to reduce carbon emissions ;
– Zach Crawford, Market Development Manager, ColorMatrix Group Inc., will talk about technological progress in colorants and additives, virtual prototyping processes and their impact on the environment ;
At the end of the morning, Jay Gouliard, VP Packaging Design & Development, Unilever, The Netherlands, will present his vision of sustainable development as a new space for innovation.
Lunch will then be a privileged moment for getting together. The layout of the hall, which groups together the lectures, exhibition and breaks on the same premises, is particularly conducive to visiting the booths for discussions and exchanges of information with exhibitors and speakers.
The afternoon session will be chaired by Mr. Michel Dupuis, Senior Vice-president Packaging Purchases and Development, Chanel. Statements will take stock of the main innovations that make it possible to reduce the carbon footprint of perfume packaging.
– Franck Legrand, Development and Sales Director, Bormioli Rocco & Figlio, France, will describe customer demand. He will give case studies and present the ensuing prospects ;
– Nicolas Le Jeune, Technical Manager, Heinz Glass France, will address the state-of-the-art in tampoprinting and prospects for reducing environmental impact ;
– Patrick BOUSQUEL, Product Marketing and Innovation Manager, VALOIS, will focus his paper on customised pumps in luxury perfumes together with the environmental aspects in this field ;
– Pascal Leroy, Marketing Manager and Philippe Morel, Sales Manager France and Belgique, Sleever International, will discuss their companys commitment to sustainable development. This is a daily goal, particularly in three areas : social responsibility, preservation of the environment and economic growth ;
After the break, Dr. Andreas Ritzenhoff, President & CEO, Seidel GmbH + Co., Germany, a world renowned expert in nano technologies, will share his vision of prospects and environmental impact reductions as revealed in their studies;
– The paper by Ludovic Anceau, CEO, Ileos division Socoplan (Flexpaq – Socopol -Flexasia) will focus on samples. He will discuss customer expectations, regulatory constraints, printing techniques and packaging materials, the bio-process research they are conducting, VOC decomposition and carbon footprint ;
– François BRENEY, Technical Manager, Iggesund Paperboard, France will explain the means used to produce INVERCOTE paperboard without any fossil CO2 emissions and how to be self-sufficient in terms of thermal and electrical energy ;
– With Eric Dardaine, Project Manager, ATT Advanced Track & Trace, we will take stock of intelligent packaging, traceability, security, new marketing tools and CRM ;
– Herlé Carn, Security products Marketing & Commercial Director, Arjo Wiggins Security, France, will describe the « SECUMATRIX » traceability systems high security authentication process ;
We will wind up the day with a lecture on « Sustainable Development and intellectual property » by Christian Derambure, DERAMBURE Conseil, Conseil en Propriété Industrielle – European Patent, Trademark & Design Attorney, Réseau DERAMBURE MORELLE & BARDOU, DMB-IP-NetworkPrésident, CNCPI (Compagnie Nationale des Conseils en Propriété Industrielle), and Jean-Louis Mathiez, President, Cinq.Pats, France, who will illustrate this paper with a case study on a particularly topical issue: “Give power to a cosmetics applicator”.
Participants will then be able to continue their discussions over cocktails in the exhibition area.

This second day will be devoted to make-up, packaging innovations and taking the environment into account. This session will be chaired by Hervé Bouix, Corporate Vice President Packaging New Ventures & Special Projects, The Estée Lauder Companies Inc., USA.
– Olivier Muller, Senior Manager in charge of CO2 activities, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), France, will focus his paper on the environmental labelling of mass market products in the French and international context ;
– Nicholas Thorne, Director, Innovation & Development, Alcan Packaging Beauty, will share his vision of « Combining Luxury and Sustainability »;
– Serge Brigot, President, Graindorge SAS, France, an expert in surface treatments, will explain how to replace hexavalent chromium with trivalent chromium in the electrochemistry of chromium plating ;
– Gerald Oelhlhorn, President, OEKAMETALL, Germany, will describe the innovations introduced in vacuum metallising and lacquering to protect the environment ;
– After the break, Denis RICHARD-ORLIANGE, Sales & marketing Manager, Cosmogen, France, will give an example of building eco-design into « make-up » innovation, the « refillable products » option, concrete solutions to improve carbon footprint and reduce harmful effects ;
– Marjorie GRAS, Export sales manager, CERFOILS SAS, France, will describe a new hot stamping technology to combat counterfeit.
PCD 2009 AWARDS
The morning will end with the « PCD 2009 Awards » ceremony. These prizes are designed to reward packaging innovations in products placed on the European market between the 1st January and the 31st December 2008.
After lunch following this awards ceremony, Osnat LUSTIG, VP Packaging Development, COTY EUROPE BEAUTY SA, will open and chair the session on innovations: hygiene, beauty, body care.
– Philippe Milazzo, Technical Services and Development Manager, Packaging & Industrial Polymers – DuPont de Nemours Geneva, will present a new technology for innovative bottle design ;
– Alix Hubin, President of Somater Conditionnements, General Manager of Somater et Associés, France, will explain how and why eco-design is a guarantee for the future of plastic bottles in hygiene-beauty-health ;
– Peter Kuhn, Head of R&D and Innovation; Neopac Packaging Solutions, Switzerland, will share his view of market trends : sustainable packaging, product protection, convenience and aesthetics;
– Yannick Brunat, Vice President Marketing & Sales Fragrance & Cosmetics Division, Ing. Erich Pfeiffer GmbH, Germany, will describe systems for delivering cosmetics and cosmeceutical formulations;
– Olivier de Saignes, Director, Marketing, Alcan Packaging Beauty European Tubes, will talk about innovations: aesthetics, functionality and commitment to sustainable development.
These lectures go hand in hand with the exhibition. They are designed to explain innovations which, more often than not, escape the notice of visitors strolling along the aisles of a trade fair.
The exhibition brings together the suppliers of packaging leaders in each of the following categories: glass, pumps, plastic materials, paperboard and carton, cases and gift boxes, surface treatment & decoration, fight against counterfeit, etc.
