Box produced with Klabin cartonboard wins Abre Design & Packaging Award

Friday 07. November 2008 - The winning box was for Sadia’s microwave pizza, an innovation developed by Brasilgrafica, Malaga and Klabin

The box for Sadia’s microwave pizza, created by Klabin, Brasilgrafica and Malaga, took first place in the “Packaging Technology” section during the 8th edition of the Abre Design and Packaging Awards, the most important packaging contest in Brazil.

This box was judged to be the best in the Food category by a group of specialists from the most widely varying areas. Besides examining the innovation and quality of the box concerning its structure and the materials used, the jury also took the product’s ergonomics, functionality, opening and closing systems, hygiene, safety, printing and utilization into consideration.

Thanks to the partnership between Sadia, Klabin, Brasilgrafica and Malaga, the microwave pizza boxes have been developed using high technology materials. They not only ensure practicality and speed in preparation, but these solutions keep the product crisp, soft and tasty.

The Abre Award, organized by the Brazilian Packaging Association, is considered to be the most important packaging contest in the country, enjoying international recognition. The winning boxes are put on display in the principal fairs around the world and can compete for WorldStar, the most important international award in the sector offered by the World Packaging Organization – WPO, which sponsors the Abre Award.

About the box
The box has a preparation plate laminated with polyester film, which accelerates heating, keeping the pie crispy and the properties and taste of the product unaltered. This coating, made by Malaga – a board metalizing industry -, allows the pizza to go straight from the freezer to the microwave and be ready to eat in five minutes.

In this new version of Sadia’s pizza, SBS board was used to laminate the disc and KlaFold FZ to package the final product. SBS is a white board produced with bleached virgin fibers which guarantee purity and do not interfere with the organoleptic properties of the packaged food. This SBS cartonboard is the only one of its kind in Brazil to possess these characteristics and also to have susceptor technology, a pioneering process from Malaga which converts microwave energy into thermal energy.

The board used for the final box is KlaFold FZ, made with a mixture of short and long fibers which impart better visual and mechanical results to the packaging. An additional feature of this board is its moisture resistance, a key property to ensure that the product reaches the consumer in perfect condition, since it does not crush. “Besides this, Klabin board has excellent printability, since it has short eucalyptus fibers in its composition”, adds Celio Magalhaes, marketing manager for Brasilgrafica, the company responsible for developing, printing and finishing the box.

All boards produced by Klabin conform to the most demanding norms for packaging materials in direct contact with foodstuff, such as those of the American agency – FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and the German institute – BfR (Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung). ISEGA, the renowned independent institute from Germany, attests to their conformity.

As well as its quality, Klabin’s customers can count on paper and board which has been certified by the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council). All the company’s packaging paper and board plants have earned the right to use the FSC trademark, which attests that forest management and the paper manufacturing process are conducted sustainably, with raw material traceability at every step of production.
