Baldwin Celebrates 90th Anniversary at Graph Expo With Expanded Range of Process Automation and Cleaning Consumable Solutions

Monday 20. October 2008 - Baldwin Technology Company, Inc., a leading worldwide manufacturer of press controls and accessories, will be setting some innovative trends at Graph Expo, where it will present its current extensive product portfolio as well as new technical developments.

These will include systems for sheet-fed and commercial-web presses. A wide range of Baldwin equipment can also be seen in operation on many key press manufacturers’ stands throughout the exhibition. Baldwin’s systems lead the industry in their ability to improve print quality, press productivity and efficiency, while ensuring they have the least impact possible on the environment and supporting the sustainability efforts of the graphic arts industry.

New PREPAC E, Plus and X-treme Cleaning Consumables for faster, better and more cost-effective cleaning

Baldwin will introduce exciting new additions to its award-winning, environmentally efficient line of consumables for automatic cleaning systems (PREPAC and DRYPAC). With the release of PREPAC E, Plus and X-treme technologies, Baldwin can now offer both high performance PREPAC solutions for hybrid, UV and textured cylinder applications as well as significantly improved cost-effective PREPAC cleaning for traditional heatset web and sheet-fed printing applications.

Baldwin will also introduce at Graph Expo its new ‘Maxi’ technology for wide-web Baldwin IMPACT and IMPACT Flex and FLEX2 systems using optical cloth detecting. ‘Maxi’ technology can be used with PREPAC E, Plus and X-treme and eliminates false early-out and cloth-out indications by incorporating new stripe sequences and geometry for start-right alignment and a 5-10% increase in usage per PREPAC.

Parts and Service Plus, solutions for challenging business conditions

In today’s demanding market, printers have to achieve maximum productivity and reliability from equipment, and Baldwin’s Parts and Service Solutions will be featured at Graph Expo. Individually tailored parts and service packages are available to retrofit and optimize existing Baldwin systems. Baldwin will also introduce a new Preventive Maintenance program, which will enable customers to reduce waste and consumable costs by maintaining their Baldwin systems at optimum performance levels.

Leader in Cleaning Systems

Baldwin offers the largest selection of press cleaning systems, with products for offset blankets and printing cylinders as well as for guide, ink and chill rollers. Baldwin’s automatic blanket cleaning products are based on more than 30 years’ experience of designing, building and installing systems, which has resulted in the largest customer base in this area. The company will be presenting further significant developments at Graph Expo, offering even greater reductions in spoilage, VOC emission and use of materials.

Even within one specific technology, such as automatic blanket cleaning, Baldwin provides several options to the end user, e.g. Impact FLEX2 (for single around press applications) and Fusion (for double around press applications), which utilise dry or pre-impregnated cloth; ProTech, which uses ground-breaking brush cleaning technology; or TowerClean, which is an inexpensive automatic blanket cleaning system offering a very fast return on investment. Products such as Jetstream, which removes dust from the paper web before it enters the first printing unit, are also becoming popular. With such a choice, customers have the option to best match their press, budget and work requirements.

New ImpactFusion-F and FLEX2 Cleaning

New levels of washing time and reductions in waste and consumables are just some of the features offered by Baldwin’s new ImpactFusion-F and FLEX2 automatic blanket cleaning systems, which have been introduced into the commercial web market and are now being released to the newspaper and semi-commercial sectors. The unique ImpactFusion-F and FLEX2 systems give the user the choice between using a dry cloth with cleaning agent or PREPAC, which is pre-impregnated with an environmentally friendly, virtually VOC-free cleaning agent.

ProTech HS

The new ProTech HS brush blanket cleaning system for heatset web presses has proven in pressrooms around the world that it aggressively reduces wash waste through minimized fluid usage and shorter, enhanced wash programs. Advanced self-cleaning ‘flicker-bar’ technology significantly extends brush maintenance intervals.

Fluid and Temperature Systems – dampening solution preparation and filtration with sustainability

Baldwin’s latest fluid and temperature control systems mirror the trend of creating printed material while achieving sustainability of resources. Baldwin’s product range includes options for all market segments, performance and capacity requirements, including solutions for reducing or eliminating alcohol.

New CombiLiner and Ultra-CombiLiner

The new CombiLiner and Ultra-CombiLiner are two new versions of Baldwin’s patented device for ink temperature control and dampening solution preparation and cooling for sheet-fed and commercial web presses. They incorporate an advanced heat exchange concept for efficient energy consumption and operating costs.

New Value-Engineered BasicLiner

Baldwin will introduce a new value-engineered and manufactured BasicLiner, which offers operating efficiency improvements at an attractive price. The highly successful BasicLiner series includes models to cover all sheet-fed and web requirements.

Maxima Spray Dampening Technology – sets the standard in heatset web applications

Baldwin’s LithoSpray Maxima was specifically engineered for high performance semi-commercial, book, catalogue, magazine and commercial printing applications. Baldwin continues to lead the industry in spray nozzle, valve and control technology, which ensure optimized control of print quality and the lowest possible start-up and running waste regardless of web width and paper grade. LithoSpray Maxima is fitted with Baldwin’s patented Constant C technology, which eliminates blocking of spray nozzles by ink mist and dust, maximizing uptime and minimizing operational maintenance.

New WebCatcher S14 and S18

In the area of web protection, Baldwin offers a complete line of reliable web protection devices under the product name ProTect. New to the ProTect line are the WebCatcher S14 and S18 for use in the high performance commercial web and retail segments. The new WebCatcher S14 will prevent press damage from a web break at speeds of up to 13 m/s and the WebCatcher S18 for web speeds of up to 18 m/s. Customer options for the WebCatcher series include the stripe wrap-up recognition system, DSWP, and the automatically adjustable Airknife A³.

Drying Systems for Sheet-fed applications

Baldwin’s drying systems include the Graphiset GS 4. Designed for sheet-fed presses, the combined IR and hot air dryer is a highly economic unit, particularly suited for demanding production applications requiring in-line dispersion. Baldwin has more than 35 years’ experience in the development and manufacture of IR and combination dryers and offers a range of options including systems for presses with low and high-pile delivery units.

Baldwin was founded in 1918 on Long Island, USA and Graph Expo offers the ideal opportunity to celebrate 90 years of providing industry-leading technology in which constant innovation has resulted in several ‘highlights’. These include benchmarks at the end of the 1960s with the introduction of dampening solution preparation technologies and in 1976, when the company established, with great success, automatic offset blanket cleaning systems for the sheet-fed market. A few years later, Baldwin launched the first automatic blanket cleaning systems for commercial web and newspaper applications. Further milestones include the formation of subsidiaries in Japan (1968) and Germany (1971).
