CTP - Computer to Plate

Four Newspapers Adopt KODAK Digital Solutions including Workflow, CTP and Non Process Plates

Monday 13. October 2008 - Steve Miller Named Product Manager, Newspaper Workflow

Prepress professionals at the Princeton Daily Clarion and Watertown Public Opinion report similar results over the past several months: quicker time to plate, fewer errors, faster turnaround, and higher quality. The daily newspapers in Indiana and South Dakota implemented new production workflow systems with solutions from Kodak.

“Workflow plays a critical role in every print provider’s business, regardless of market segment or technology used to create the printed materials,” said Steve Miller, Product Manager, Newspaper Workflow, Kodak’s Graphic Communications Group. “Our focus is on helping customers drive growth, find efficiencies and improve their bottom line through KODAK Unified Workflow Solutions.”

Recently appointed to his position, Miller is responsible for product development and marketing across Kodak’s portfolio of workflow solutions for the newspaper market.

The Princeton Daily Clarion, with a circulation of 6,070, installed the KODAK NEWSMANAGER Workflow System with KODAK NEWSMANAGER Page Pairer Software, the KODAK PRINERGY EVO Workflow System, and KODAK PREPS Imposition Software to drive its new KODAK TRENDSETTER NEWS 50 Thermal Platesetter with KODAK PF-N Non Process Plates. In addition to its flagship paper and one other daily, the Princeton Daily Clarion’s web press facility prints eight weeklies, 15 broadsheets, 30 tabloids, a variety of specially configured saddle stitch books, and other publications. It also handles a variety of commercial print jobs. The Princeton Daily Clarion is a member of the PAGE cooperative buying association and part of Brehm Communications, Inc.

“Kodak’s workflow offerings help us save time and reduce errors at every step in the prepress process. For a shop like ours that produces so many different types of publications, the automated imposition capabilities of PREPS Software has really helped us reach greater levels of efficiency,” said Mark Crowley, Systems Manager, Princeton Daily Clarion. “On the commercial print side, we turn jobs around much quicker and rarely rush to make pick up times from our overnight delivery service.”

At the 12,372circulation Watertown Public Opinion, a PAGE member, publisher Mark Roby selected workflow and CTP solutions from Kodak based, in part, on the good feedback he received from a nearby newspaper. By running similar systems, the two newspapers can back each other up to ensure continuity. The Watertown Public Opinion added the PRINERGY EVO Workflow System, PREPS Digital Imposition Software, KODAK STACCATO Screening, and the KODAK TRENDSETTER NEWS 70 Thermal Platesetter.

The system from Kodak also moves jobs through a commercial sheetfed operation within the newspaper’s production facility. STACCATO Screening is advanced, second order FM screening technology that enables easy, consistent production of high fidelity, artifact free images that exhibit fine detail and more impactful color.

“With STACCATO Screening, we achieve vibrant tones and contrasts for outstanding resolution and quality that our commercial customers demand,” said Roby. “With intuitive proofing tools, automation tools, and platesetting productivity, the KODAK System has helped us avoid mistakes and complete jobs with greater speed and ease.”

Other recent newspaper customers of Kodak include The Merced Sun-Star, a 14,711 circulation daily in California that installed the TRENDSETTER NEWS 70 Thermal Platesetter. In Astoria, Ill., K.K. Stevens Publishing Co. also added a TRENDSETTER NEWS 70 Platesetter. The web offset printing company produces a variety of newspapers and other publications.
