Torstar Corporation Announces Appointment of Donald Babick as Interim President of Star Media Group and Interim Publisher of the Toronto Star
Wednesday 01. October 2008 - Torstar Corporation (TSX:TS.B) announced today that Donald Babick has been appointed Interim President of the Star Media Group and Interim Publisher of the Toronto Star, succeeding Jagoda Pike effective October 4, 2008.
Ms. Pike has accepted an appointment as President and Chief Operating Officer of Ontario’s bid for the 2015 Pan American Games. “Jagoda Pike has a strong commitment to our community and province and will be a terrific leader for Ontario’s bid,” said Robert Prichard, President and CEO of Torstar Corporation. “She has made major contributions to Torstar over the past 22 years and we are very grateful for all she has done. She is an important and innovative leader in the Canadian newspaper industry and we wish her well.”
Donald Babick has been a member of Torstar’s Board of Directors since 2004. He previously served as President of Southam Newspapers, President and Chief Operating Officer of CanWest Publications and a publisher of newspapers in Edmonton, Vancouver and Toronto. “Don Babick is one of the most experienced and respected daily newspaper executives in Canada,” Prichard said. “We are very fortunate to be able to call on him to lead the Star Media Group and the Toronto Star while we immediately launch a national search for the next Publisher. The Star will be in excellent and steady hands during this transition period.”
Mr. Babick will remain a member of Torstar’s Board of Directors while serving in this interim role.
“We expect to move briskly to identify the next Publisher of the Toronto Star,” Prichard said. “To lead Canada’s largest daily newspaper is to hold one of the newspaper industry’s most important jobs. We will be considering both internal and external candidates and expect to announce a successor before the end of the year.”
