Protection from forgery is becoming increasingly important, particularly in the area of packaging. The PraxisDialog entitled “From high-security printing to brand protection”, held on September 17, 2008 at manroland in Offenbach/Germany, showed how brand protection can be implemented in practical terms during printing.
Serving security
Specialist speakers from JURA JSP, Weilburger Graphics, CMD (Cross Media Design), Leonhard Kurz and Technische Universität München provided information about brand protection during the comprehensive printing process. The experts vividly conveyed practical expertise concerning the application of coating, special inks, foils and holograms. By combining different types of coating, hidden information can be applied to packages, and the hidden information can only be seen using a decoder with UV light. Hologram foils, on the other hand, which are applied by hot or cold foil enhancement, provide forgery protection that is visible to the consumer. The participants then received in-depth information about how visible and invisible forgery protection elements affect the design of a product.

In addition, Hochschule Mannheim (University of Applied Sciences) presented the O-PUR project, which researches brand protection mechanisms. Via a printed code that is registered during production, each individual printed product can be identified. Some of the introduced security mechanisms were immediately applied at the Print Technology Center where a sample packaging was produced on a six-color ROLAND 500 with the use of security coatings, UV-active colors, and the O-PUR code. Via decoder lenses, the participants could immediately examine the security elements under UV light.
