The New York Times Company Announces Third Annual Nonprofit Excellence Awards
Monday 15. September 2008 - Deadline is November 21
The New York Times Company announced today that applications are now available for the third annual New York Times Company Nonprofit Excellence Awards, recognizing outstanding nonprofit organizations based in and serving the communities of New York City, Long Island and Westchester. Online applications are available at www.NYTimes-community.com and will be accepted through Friday, Nov. 21.
The Community Affairs department of the Times Company is collaborating with the Nonprofit Coordinating Committee of New York (NPCC) and the New York Regional Association of Grantmakers (NYRAG) on the program. Applications from any New York State nonprofit organizations operating in Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, Nassau County, Suffolk County or Westchester County will be considered.
Up to four organizations will be awarded a total of $40,000, with $25,000 going to the grand prize winner for Overall Management Excellence. Awards will be presented for outstanding performance in one or more other key areas of nonprofit management. Key areas correspond to the following criteria, which form the basis for evaluation of nominees: overall management focus on results; governance structure that moves the organization forward; strong, transparent and accountable financial management; inclusive, diverse and responsive organizational practices; enlightened use of human resources and technology; regular and effective communications; and effective, ethical fundraising and resource development.
Each of the winning organizations will also receive a scholarship to The Institute for Not-for-Profit Management at Columbia Business School Executive Education.
Recipients of the 2008 New York Times Company Nonprofit Excellence Awards were: Community Health Action of Staten Island, grand prize winner for overall management excellence; Harlem RBI for excellent communications; Ifetayo Cultural Arts for excellent culturally-based management strategies; and The Institute for Family Health for excellent use of technology and focus on mission.
“We are honored to be presenting this award,” said Diane McNulty, executive director of community affairs and media relations, The New York Times Company. “We’re delighted to have the opportunity to recognize and celebrate these organizations for their managerial excellence.”
“This program offers a great educational opportunity for the public and for nonprofit professionals. By applying, nonprofits get practical guidance and feedback that enable them to go from good to great,” said Michael Clark, president, Nonprofit Coordinating Committee of New York.
“Strong nonprofit management is critical to the outcomes that NYRAG members are trying to achieve, and we are thrilled to be a part of this important program,” said Ronna Brown, president, New York Regional Association of Grantmakers. “We look forward to celebrating and learning from exemplary nonprofits in our region.”
