New KODAK CCD Image Sensor Enables HD Image Capture

Thursday 11. September 2008 - Provides Full Support for High Speed, High Definition Video

Eastman Kodak Company (NYSE:EK) is helping to power the growth of High Definition image capture with a new CCD image sensor targeted to industrial and broadcast video markets.

Built using Kodak’s latest Interline CCD technology, the new KODAK KAI-02150 Image Sensor provides full support for the 1080p image capture standard, supporting 1920 x 1080 pixel (16:9 aspect ratio) image capture at 60 frames per second – twice the frame rate of standard HD video. The new sensor also provides broad dynamic range and excellent imaging performance – parameters that are critical for applied and professional markets.

“Applied imaging applications not only require the higher pixel counts provided by HD formats, but also need each individual pixel to perform at the highest level,” said Michael Miller, manager of Kodak’s CCD Image Sensor Business, part of the company’s Image Sensor Solutions group. “Kodak is known as a leading innovator of high performance image sensors, and the new KAI-02150 allows camera manufacturers to expand into HD image capture with confidence.”

Engineering grade devices of the KAI-02150 are currently available, with volume production planned for Q4 2008.

The KAI-02150 is based on the KODAK TRUESENSE 5.5 micron Interline Transfer CCD Platform, which provides advances in pixel size, frame rate, and image quality compared to the previous generation of technology. Designed in the popular 2/3″ optical format, the new KAI-02150 sensor also shares a common package, pin-out, and electrical configuration with the 1-megapixel KODAK KAI-01050 Image Sensor, allowing camera manufacturers to easily adapt existing camera designs to support the new device.
