GP Studio Olomouc prints alcohol free on KBA printing presses
Monday 01. September 2008 - The FGP Studio in Olomouc is one of the most important partners of KBA-Grafitec in the Czech Republic. They have been favouring KBA printing presses from Dobruka on a long term basis. This year, the FGP Studio printshop has completely eliminated the use of isopropyl alcohol from their production process.
The printshop completely replaced their printing presses in 2007. The KBA Performa 74-5 and Performa 66-5 were installed in the first half of the said year. Further KBA Performa 66-4 and Performa 66-2 printing presses were added in the second half of the year. The production capacity of the printshop therefore represents 16 printing units of which five are in the SRB2 format. All the Performa printing presses are interconnected with the CtP Esko-Graphics Platedriver 4 with a help of CIP4 standard. The installation of the sixteen printing units of the Performa printing presses during last year turned the FGP Studio into one of the most significant customers of KBA-Grafitec. “Offset printing technology is widely available on todays market, however we are one of the few printshops that can also offer screen refinement,” stated Mr Miloslav Kyjevský, the owner of the FGP Studio. The new Sakurai Maestro 80A screen press serves for the special production of the company.
The FGP Studio is also gradually implementing their environmental programme. Several years ago, some of the company printing production used up to twelve percent of isopropyl alcohol and the company annually used almost 3 200 litres of IPA. They were in the category of the large polluters of the living environment. The printshop managed to reduce their original use of IPA last year down to two to three percent. The reduction of the IPA application was achieved due to the new Druckchemie Alkolight product application which contains only 40 % of VOC.
The new objective of the FGP Studio for the 2008 year is to print completely without IPA. For this purpose, the studio has used the option of training their printers in KBA Radebeul. The training focused on printing on KBA printing presses without the need for IPA. The journey from printing with reduced quantities of IPA up to completely alcohol free printing is going to take more time. It was the Symat company, which has a branch in the premises of the FGP Studio, who helped the company with the complete elimination of IPA from the printing process. IPA has been replaced with Alkoless from the production of the Druckchemie company, offered by the DC Ku?im company. “We have tested many products where the producers claim that they allow printing without the need for IPA, but we cannot confirm that it is true,” said Mr Roman Starzyk, the sales representative of the Symat company.
The solution for the ecological burden was co-financed from the structural funds. FGP Studio requested the funding from the Ministry of the Environment. The project was prepared with the help of the Olomouc consultancy agency, Viko. The funds were provided within approximately six months from the submission of the request. The affecting content of the project was to purchase the Technotrans aggregates for the KBA printing presses. Each of the Performa printing presses is now fitted with new Technotrans aggregate which allows for digital dosing of the dampening solution. Two Technotrans alpha.c aggregates are placed outside the printing hall. They serve for the KBA Performa 74-5 and Performa 66-5. Another aggregate Technotrans alpha.a is placed by the KBA Performa 66-4 printing press and the two-colour Performa 66-2 press is supplied with the dampening solution from the Technotrans alpha.d aggregate.
