New Scripps Executive Will Lead Information Technology for Newspaper Division

Saturday 07. June 2008 - Jim York, an information technology executive and publisher, has been named director of information technology for the newspaper division of The E. W. Scripps Company.

Beginning June 16, York, 46, will work with Scripps’ 15 newspapers to develop and maintain a technological plan that supports their organizational needs and aligns with business strategies.

“Jim has a long history and impressive track record in the newspaper industry, having served as both a publisher of a mid-sized newspaper as well as in a corporate IT role,” said Mark Contreras, senior vice president of newspapers for Scripps. “These two experiences allowed Jim to see both sides of the corporate spectrum and truly give him a unique perspective of our industry. Jim’s background enables him to understand and deliver the technology that our newspapers need.”

Most recently, York had served as publisher of The Daily Journal, a Lee Enterprises, Inc. newspaper, in Park Hills, Mo. During York’s tenure, The Daily Journal saw 950% online revenue growth, and generated 225% online audience growth from 2003-2008.

Prior to taking the reins as publisher, York served as vice president of information technology for Pulitzer Newspapers, Inc. (PNI), which owned The Daily Journal before selling it to Lee Enterprises, Inc. York led IT corporate-wide for PNI from 2000 until 2005, accepting the role of president and publisher of The Daily Journal in 2003. He held both IT and president and publisher roles concurrently until 2005.

Before leading IT for PNI, York was a network manager for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

York earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, graduating magna cum laude from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville. He has completed coursework toward a Master of Business Administration degree in Information Systems Management from Webster University in St. Louis.

York and his wife, Laura, and two children, Jesse and Maia, will be moving to Cincinnati this summer from Ste. Genevieve, Mo., while their oldest son, Cody, stays behind to finish college.
