Mohawk Backs up Carbon Neutral Claims with Emissions Inventory

Wednesday 04. June 2008 - Continuing its commitment to sustainable practices, Mohawk Fine Papers Inc. [Drupa booth 71C51] has again joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Climate Leaders program, successfully completing EPA base year reporting requirements.

“EPA applauds Mohawk Fine Papers for joining the Climate Leaders program. We look forward to working with them to further reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and protect our environment,” said Robert J. Meyers, Principal Deputy Assistant Administrator of EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation.

Mohawk joined the Climate Leaders program in February of 2007 with a pledge to inventory the reduction of its corporate-wide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To remain a member of the Climate Leaders program, Mohawk submits an annual report of its emissions inventory data to EPA and must pass a required site visit evaluation.

“We believe that it is our corporate responsibility to find the most innovative solutions to help offset the depletion of natural resources and the effects of climate change. We are actively involved with the development of alternative energy sources, waste management, and more. We value the work EPA does, and our participation in that work,” said George Milner, Senior Vice President, Energy, Environmental and Government Affairs, Mohawk Fine Papers.

Mohawk has been a longtime supporting participant in the efforts of EPA, first becoming a Green Power Partner in 2003. Since then, Mohawk has received many acknowledgements including the most recent 2007 award in the category of Green Power Partner of the Year, which recognizes leading national green power purchasers for their contribution in helping advance the development of the nation’s green power market.

Mohawk was the first in its industry on many environmental fronts: the first mill to make coated paper with postconsumer waste, one of the first large-scale production facilities in the U.S. to offset its electrical energy with renewable wind energy certificates, the first to be certified by Green Seal, and the first to move toward carbon neutral production with its Beckett Concept, Beckett Expression, Strathmore Writing, and Strathmore Script grades.

Mohawk currently offers the largest environmentally preferable paper portfolio of any paper mill with more than 2,000 papers made with recycled content, more than 3,000 papers manufactured with wind-generated electricity, and almost 900 papers made carbon neutral.
