The Artemis Transat – Fujifilm yacht – day 15
Monday 26. May 2008 - Instead of the usual bank holiday shenanigans of watching TV and overeating, Alex is still pushing hard on Fujifilm in the race.
Speaking to him by satellite phone, he said: “Things are going well and at the moment I am locked in battle with two other boats – one in front and one behind. It’s really tight. I’ve fixed the Genoa and am travelling at about 8 knots. I think it’s going to be a really close battle to the finish – there’s no real distance between 6th and 3rd position.”
Alex managed to sleep last night and has eaten well and said he was feeling a lot more human today. He added:”It was fast sailing last night and I was running North of the run line. I’ve used the wind to get South as I’m expecting a wind shift to the South West. It’ll be better for me to be on the left hand side of the course when the big winds come so it’s been a long term tactical decision. We’re tactically really well placed but we are expecting an area of no wind in about 6 hours.”
Alex is still getting over the sight of a whale really close to the boat as well. He said:”It was almost the size of the boat and spraying water everywhere…I suppose it’s a perk of the job! It really was brilliant.”
Alex is currently in 6th position.
