The future is today! ACTEGA Terra presents coating innovations at drupa

Wednesday 14. May 2008 - In hall 3, ACTEGA Terra shows revolutionary innovations in the area of waterbased coatings, UV varnishes and effect coatings. These innovations will be presented to the broad public for the first time.

1. Coatings based on renewable resources
Also in the printing industry, requirements increase for environmental-friendly consumables and processes. “Green Printing” is in the centre of interest. New technologies that save resources are introduced; ecological printing inks and substrates are used.

But there has still been one challenge – until now. After intensive research, ACTEGA Terra is now introducing a new product line. TerraGreen is not only waterbased and free of solvents. It is based on natural resins and waxes. In its resource base it is independent of petrochemicals and so it does not add to the shortage of fossil resources. In addition, TerraGreen protects our climate in a sustainable way.

Next to the environment, the printer profits as well. The TerraGreen Gloss Coating G 5/200 is the first coating of the new product line. Certified by the accredited institute Dr. Wessling, it has excellent odour and migration properties. This makes
it suitable for the direct contact with foodstuffs. The coating was developed for the application out of the coating unit in sheet-fed offset. Its core functions, such as scratch and scuff resistance, block resistance or gloss, are comparable to
traditional water based coatings. There is no change in production necessary.

In future, many printbuyers will put more emphasis on the
environmental awareness of their suppliers. Printers that fulfil the demand of their customers clearly benefit. They act as pioneers and realise a positive image effect. This does not only satisfy existing customers, but also supports the acquisition of new clients.

2. Matt and gloss effects with just one coating
High gloss pictures on matt paper – many printing jobs in the area of commercial printing face this requirement. Surely, a well-known example is the traditional product brochure. Is the objective to realise matt and gloss effects with just one coating unit and
without the use of primers, this is a challenge.

If printers choose matt paper in combination with the full application of a gloss coating, the matt character of the substrate is lost. Taking a matt coating, the printing motive’s gloss is affected. In the same way, the use of gloss paper does not lead to the requested result.

The solution is a coating that can realise both effects. With the waterbased TerraEffekt matt & gloss G 9/707, applied out of the coating unit after printing, areas with high colour coverage become glossy. The surface of areas that are not printed, however, become matt.

The advantages of the TerraEffekt matt & gloss G 9/707 are obvious. In just one coating process, matt and gloss effects are achieved. Moreover, the coating shows a good scratch and scuff resistance as well as block resistance. The use on a gloss paper leads to optimum results.

3. UV Spot Coating with high edge definition
Everything depends on the right accentuation. By means of stressing single elements within a printed area, designers lead the awareness of the viewer to the most important parts. The more an element stands out from its setting, the more attention it gains. Naturally, brand owners know which information about their products they want to focus on. Whether they choose text parts or a picture, the main thing is that their message reaches the customer.

But how can elements be emphasised most effectively? Surely, a good example is UV spot coating. If the coating is additionally able to realise a clear differentiation from its background, the printbuyer’s requirement is fulfilled.

As a result of this thought, TerraGloss UV Spot Coating G 8/292 was developed for the spot application. This coating shows an excellent high edge definition together with an optimum gloss and gives a raised appearance to the finished print. It is highly reactive and characterised by good odour properties. The coating can be applied out of the coating unit in sheet-fed offset or via offline coating.
