BASF raises prices of carboxylic acids

Monday 03. March 2008 - Effective immediately, or as existing contracts permit, BASF is raising its prices for 2-ethylhexanoic acid (2-EHA) and propionic acid in Europe by €40 per metric ton.

BASF is one of the world’s leading companies with 2-EHA and produces the substance at its Verbund site in Ludwigshafen, Germany. 2-EHA is a chemical intermediate for many industrial applications, for example for the manufacture of plasticizers, PVC stabilizers, lubricants and drying additives for coatings.

BASF is a leading supplier of propionic acid with productions facilities at it sites in Ludwigshafen, Germany and Nanjing, China. The major application of this organic acid is feedgrain preservation. Propionic acid is also widely used in the production of vitamin E and in the fields of pharmaceuticals, crop protection agents, solvents, food preservatives and plastics.

Feedgrain preservation based on the propionic acid offers economic and ecological benefits over other methods. BASF has conducted an eco-efficiency analysis that shows that using propionic acid to preserve feedgrain is much more eco-efficient than methods involving drying or storage in air-tight silos. BASF markets propionic-acid-based preservatives under the trade names Lupro Grain and Luprosil.
