Safety you can see, hear and feel

Clear advantages for supplier, bottler and consumer thanks to Silgan's patent-registered metal and plastic closure 51PT-Band.

Tuesday 12. February 2008 - Clear advantages for supplier, bottler and consumer thanks to Silgan's patent-registered metal and plastic closure 51PT-Band.

Optimisation of its metal, plastic and composite closures has always had first priority at Silgan White Cap. The latest achievement of this continuous improvement process is the new 51PT-Band. This patented composite metal and plastic closure atures a plastic tamper evident band and safety button indicator and its universal closure design is suitable for all Press-On Twist-Off applications.

Convincing Features

The 51PT-Band closure convinces with numerous features. The combination of button and plastic tamper evident band ensures a double safety in respect of package tampering, which is not only visible but can also be heard and felt. While the button pops up with a clearly audible click during first opening due to the release of the vacuum, the plastic band simultaneously breaks from the closure, staying permanently detached. This is an important security aspect, especially in baby food. A further plus in the closure design is the reduced migration of packaging material components into the food. This is achieved through an improved compound placement plus the use of newly developed compounds.

An additional advantage of the 51mm PT-Band is the new gasket geometry, which requires distinctly less opening torque and is suitable for the versatile use of the closures in the numerous PT-applications. What is more, the renewed closure shell design leads to a significant improvement of impact resistance. This additional robustness is also very beneficial for the manufacturing process at our customer’s plants.

Advantages for Sealing Process and Supply Chain

It goes without saying that the patent-registered composite metal and plastic closure can be processed with the existing Silgan White Cap line equipment. What is more, the new “Magnetic Cap Seating Assembly” enhances the safety and reliability of the entire sealing process.

Compound materials already used for the Press-On Twist-Off closures can also be used for the 51mm PT-Band. Silgan White Cap carefully monitors these materials regarding changes in food contact regulations as part of their continuous improvement process.

The unification of the PT glass finishes into a single specification is an additional benefit for the whole supply chain. 51mm PT-Band requires an adjusted glass finish, that can also be used for the standard PT closure.
