Tipografia Vaticana is a prestigious print service provider that has operated as the official printing press for the Vatican City since 1587. Steeped in history, the organisation has a small digital printing department which is primarily used for pre-print and production processes and has traditionally used printers such as roto-offset and flatbed printers.
Tipografia Vaticana carries out print-related activities for Pontifical acts and official documents for the various Dicasteries, Offices of the Holy See and the Vatican City State. The organisation produces a variety of products and documents, including the State’s daily newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano; editiorial material for organisations connected to the Holy See; material for the Vatican Museums and Vatican Apostolic Library; promotional material on behalf of the Vatican Publishing House, the Congregations and the Bambino Gesú Paedratic Hospital (a local childrens’ hospital). The printing house’s work is predominently commercial.
Compiling with the will of the Vatican State to digitise processes, Tipografia Vaticana has been undergoing a digital transformation project since 2018. The project aims to integrate the company’s exisiting technology with that of new digital technology. What’s more, the digitisation project seeks to:
Aid greater operational flexibility, including simpler and more flexible communication
Create the ability to print productively with digital offset quality
Use additional colors to enhance applications (e.g. pantone and white).
Thanks to the adoption of HP Indigo technology, and in particular an HP Indigo 12K digital press, the first to be sold within the Vatican State, this extraordinary organisation that has traditionally only complied with centuries-old culture is now facing an innovative transformation, in order to reach more stakeholders and explore new operating methods.
Since installing a HP Indigo 12K digital press, Tipografia Vaticana has been able to print and produce applications with both flexibility and quality, meeting its aims for the digitisation project. The company is also now able to print on demand, which offers the ability to handle last-minute production requests and reduces waste by limiting the amount of overproduced stock. This in turn reduces inventory costs as the need to store unsold products is eliminated.
Recognised by industry leaders for its excellent quality, the HP Indigo 12K digital press was a perfect solution for Tipografia Vaticana. Comparable to offset, the press uses HP Original Inks and offers up to seven colours, with the possibility of using pantone and special colours to enhance the outputs being produced. Short-runs are also now possible for Tipografia Vaticana, as well as customisation, a trend from which it has never before been able to benefit.
Sustainability is an important factor for Tipografia Vaticana, with the company feeling confident they can now meet its sustainability goals thanks to HP Indigo technology. The HP Indigo 12K generates no processing waste and guarantees significant saving energy, whilst reducing production costs.
Tipografia Vaticana have also reaped the benefits of PrintOS, which has further enabled the company to take its digital transformation to the next level. With PrintOS, Tipografia Vaticana is able to remain connected to its HP printers as all times, even via mobile devices, making it easier to check-in on the progress and status of production. To complete its innovative digitisation process, Tipografia Vaticana has also equipped itself with HP’s Business Transformation Solution (BTS) training programme. Lasting twelve months, BTS offers an in-depth and accurate training course to enable professional growth.
The history and unique characteristics of Tipografia Vaticana has presented HP with a fascinating opportunity. Centuries-old tradition and digital flexibility have created a truly innovative combination.
