New Komori Concept: Offset On Demand

Wednesday 29. September 2010 - Komori Corporation (Head Office: Sumida-ku, Tokyo, Japan; President, Chairman and CEO: Yoshiharu Komori) will hold a two-day Open House on October 14 (Thursday) and 15 (Friday), 2010 for overseas customers at the Komori Graphic Technology Center in Komori’s Tsukuba Plant (Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture).

This Open House will be based on Komori’s theme of the ultimate ‘Offset on Demand’ and will present numerous new products and technologies. With the cooperation of various other manufacturers, the event will also demonstrate an integrated workflow from platemaking to printing, cutting and binding.

‘Offset on demand’ targets the printing of extremely short runs with short turnaround times by reducing makeready times, cutting paper waste, and shortening the printing process itself to the maximum extent possible while still maintaining high print quality and high productivity, which are the distinctive features of offset printing.

Komori makes available a number of products that empower the printer to achieve this goal, including automation systems such as fully automatic plate changing and automatic washing and cleaning devices. In addition, Komori has developed KHS-AI, the integrated control system with enhanced accuracy that permits the press to reliably attain target densities within 20 sheets at start-up, and the H-UV Innovative UV Curing System, an energy-saving, ozone-free technology that eliminates the need to wait for work to dry after printing, allowing the printed items to be immediately sent to the next process.

A Komori project to develop an ‘Offset On Demand Package (tentative name)’ into a commercial product has integrated the proven Lithrone S40 Series press and its well-known automation and labor-saving systems with existing products such as the H-UV System, already credited by Japanese users as being a major innovation in printing, and has pursued research and development of efficiency-enhancing functions.

To show the state of development of this ‘Offset On Demand Package’, this Open House presents a demonstration using plates created by the CTP workflow in the DoNet Center of the Komori Graphic Technology Center (KGC) with printing performed by an H-UV-equipped Lithrone S Series offset press in the KGC Demo Center. The final products will be finished by cutting, folding and saddle stitching performed immediately following printing, thus offering both a demo of ‘offset on demand’ and a demo of an H-UV-evolved packaging press.

In addition to the demos at KGC, there will be opportunities to view the Lithrone SX40RP equipped with the new Asynchronous Automatic Plate Changing System (A-APC) that enables simultaneous plate changing on all printing units. To be shown in a special specification for heavy stock, the Lithrone SX40 is single-sided full-size offset printing press configured for dedicated double-sided printing.

The ‘Offset On Demand Package’ will be shown at this Open House and the new product announcement as well as at IGAS 2011 and drupa 2012. Sales are scheduled to begin in April 2011.
