Solo Cup Company has again expanded its industry leading Bare today announced the nationwide availability of deli containers and lids made with 20 percent post-consumer recycled polyethylene (PET) plastic. The Bare by Solo deli containers, which are also recyclable, provide glass-like clarity and offer an environmentally preferable option for delis.

The recycled content deli containers will expand the Bare by Solo line beyond its popular Barebranded tableware and will replace Solo’s current DeliGourmet containers which were made entirely from virgin PET. PET is the plastic from which water bottles and many other containers are made. The material is collected in curbside recycling programs in a majority of communities. Recycled PET containers are just as recyclable as virgin PET containers.

“Our deli customers wanted ‘greener’ container options and turned to Solo for a solution,” said Karin Wennerstrom, director of foodservice product category management at Solo. “We applied our experience with recycled PET to perfect these recycled content containers. Solo is particularly focused on continually improving the environmentally preferable alternatives available to our customers and consumers.”

Bare by Solo is the industry’s first full line of eco-forward single-use foodservice products for restaurants and consumers made with recycled, recyclable, compostable or renewable materials. Earlier this year, Solo introduced Bare by Solo compostable plates, bowls and containers made with sugarcane, a renewable material, and the company also offers compostable paper plates and bowls.

The deli containers are cylindrical and offer a clear appearance. They are available in 8, 12, 16, 24 and 32 oz. sizes and handle food product temperatures from 20 to 160 degrees. All sizes share a common lid with optimum fit to reduce leakage and maintain food freshness. The stackable containers minimize storage height.

Sleeve counts on the Bare by Solo deli containers will increase to 50 containers per sleeve, up from the 25 per sleeve of the current DeliGourmet items. According to Wennerstrom, this will reduce packaging and improve deli operator convenience.

In addition to expanding its eco-forward product offerings, Solo also is a national sponsor of Keep America Beautiful and its Great American Cleanup volunteer-based community improvement effort. Solo donated Bare by Solo cups and plates to help serve food and beverages to more than 100,000 Great American Cleanup volunteers at events across the country, and provided environmental education and awareness information at several major cleanup events. The Great American Cleanup involves three million volunteers and more than 17,000 separate cleanup events in all 50 states.

“Eco-forward” is a term unique to Solo. According to the company, the term expresses Solo’s ongoing commitment to developing greener alternatives that contribute to a more environmentally sustainable future.
