Sun Chemical showcases environmental credentials at the FIPP World Magazine Congress

Wednesday 29. April 2009 - Sun Chemical, the world’s leading manufacturer of printing inks and pigments, is reinforcing its commitment to the publications industry with the announcement of its role in a number of environmental and sustainability initiatives at the 2009 FIPP World Magazine Congress. Sun Chemical will be discussing these projects on its stand (Stand 38) at the show in Old Billingsgate, London from 4 - 6 May 2009.

Given the various processes involved in the production of newspapers and magazines, environmental and sustainability issues are a key issue in the publications industry and also a top priority for Sun Chemical. To highlight its commitment to the sector, Sun Chemical has been involved in a number of environmentally friendly initiatives:

A project with Gruner + Jahr (Bertelsmann group) to measure the carbon footprint of the French weekly news magazine, VSD, from its conception to its place on the shelf. Sun Chemical is involved in the print production of the magazine and as part of the project was tasked with undertaking a carbon footprint audit of its heatset ink plant in Osterode, Germany.
The creation of the Sun Chemical Consulting division, which was set up to help printers find solutions that suit them, whatever market they are in. In this new division, experts develop an energy efficiency strategy with customers, which includes a plan to tackle carbon management. This sets out a path for the business towards improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions and costs
The ‘Two-sides’ initiative – a project involving all members of the graphic arts supply chain with the aim of dispelling any misconceptions regarding the environment that surround the print and paper industry, whilst also promoting a more responsible usage of it.
The ‘Sustainability, Energy & Environment’ report produced by the PrintCity Alliance, a group set up in 1998 to share global expertise in the graphic arts industry, of which Sun Chemical is an important member. Sun Chemical has been leading a working group set up by the Alliance to consider the issues surrounding the importance of the environment and sustainability within the print industry.

In addition to the above initiatives, and as part of its work with the Federation of Periodical Press, Sun Chemical will be producing a series of five inserts, which will demonstrate innovative, cost effective printing techniques that can help publishers ignite readers’ senses, creating excitement and value for their readers and improving brand awareness for advertisers.

Rudi Lenz, CEO, Sun Chemical, said: “As the world’s foremost producer of inks, pigments and colour technology, we continually push the limits of efficiency and strive to adopt the best operational practices to create value and remain competitive. We remain 100 per cent committed to making sure that the publications industry is one of the most efficient and environmentally friendly industry’s in the world. At Sun Chemical, we believe in all our customers and are constantly looking for ways to make them leaders in their industry and improve their efficiency even further.

“The FIPP World Magazine Congress is the perfect opportunity to showcase some of these recent projects that will enable both Sun Chemical and the publications sector to be able to function efficiently and be environmentally friendly both now and in the future.”
