New Process Calibration Method Reduces Paper Waste and Cuts Makeready Times

The updated Prinect Color Toolbox optimizes the gray balance, reduces makeready times and cuts paper waste.

The correct reproduction of gray values is a key quality indicator in printing. Until now, printers have mainly used visual checks to achieve the correct gray balance by changing the thicknesses of the ink layers for solid tints during setup.

However, this can result in unwanted changes to all tonal values that are difficult to manage. The additional corrections require an increase in the amount of paper waste and result in longer makeready times.

The new gray balance optimization function of the Prinect Color Toolbox from Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) provides a new and innovative solution within the Prinect print shop workflow. The correct gray balance can be achieved during platesetting thanks to a more precise process calibration. With this method, the operator prints a test form after the printing plates have been linearized and calibrates these to create the necessary measurement data. Data records derived from these colorimetric measurements and the reference printing conditions make a precise process calibration possible. The result of integrating Prinect with the press in this way means less paper waste and shorter makeready.

With its Quality Monitor, Calibration Tool and Profile Tools modules, the Prinect Color Toolbox also enables simple, continuous monitoring of the printing process.

“We have already received some very positive feedback from the first customers using the tool. They are particularly impressed with its very simple operation. Evidently, the less the customer has to rely on his instincts in color management, the quicker he achieves a better print result,” says Christopher Berti, Head of Prinect Product Management at Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG.
