Pitney Bowes Unveils New Mixed Mail Sorter

Monday 23. June 2008 - Pitney Bowes DMTi has introduced the VariSort Mixed Mail Sorter, a flexible sorting solution that efficiently processes a wide range of mail at speeds up to 8,000 pieces per hour, including polywrap, clean to complex flats, letters, postcards, bound printed matter, padded envelopes, small parcels and even irregular shaped pieces.

“The VariSort is an entirely new system designed from the ground up, so it enjoys multiple technical advancements,” said Stefan Berndt, Product Manager Sortation at Pitney Bowes Document Messaging Technologies. “Its greatest strength, however, is its ability to meet specific mailstream and processing requirements – mailers can choose only the capabilities they need.”

VariSort configuration options include an automatic feed station, manual feed stations, easy job set-up using separator cards, WABCR/OCR options for both incoming and outgoing mail, three dimensional measurement, in-line weighing, ink jet printing, in-line labelling, tub conveyors, automatic tub removal and air conditioning for extreme environments. These flexible options can be combined to fulfil even the most challenging applications, including:

• Mailers can process a significant amount of flat polywrap mail by using the automatic feeder for high speed processing and the in-line labeller to apply routing information on the slick polywrap surface
• European private posts can charge customers based on shape, weight and size, leveraging the in-line scale along with three dimensional measurement capabilities
• Customers with irregular shaped mailpieces – such as an envelope containing a jewel case – can leverage the manual feed stations

All of the VariSort’s capabilities are modular and easily upgraded in the field, so mailers can add to their processing capabilities as their mailstream requirements grow.

“With the VariSort, mailers can now automate mail which they are currently handling manually or not sorting at all,” said Berndt. “In Europe, mailers can take advantage of the Government Posts’ increased work share discounts for sorting flats and letters. Private Post Organisations benefit from the wide range of mail material which can now be handled automatically compared to previous manual process.”

The VariSort also enables mailers to benefit from predictable SLAs, improved accuracy, confirmable shop floor integrity and significantly reduced labour costs.
